English teams ruled, there were always 2 or 3 English teams in the semi and we took it for granted that all 4 teams would fly to the quarter finals.

By the time we get back in, English teams will be behind Spain, Germany and maybe even Italy

Times have changed

Nah, English teams have just underperformed this season and also got really tough draws in the playoffs. I'm sure they'll be fine again next season.

I think Fox is right, the top teams in Spain and Germany are currently better than the top English teams.

I think we can all agree that the quality at the top of the Prem isn't what it was 3-4 years ago. Chelsea are in transition, Arsenal can't quite seem to get their act together, City have gone backwards and Utd are ruling with ease by virtue of everyone else being poor but even they're not as good as they were. And then there is us.

The only team to have improved is Spurs.

I think City are slightly better than they were 4 years ago, but yes, that's correct.

I agree English teams arean't as good as a few years back and it's highlighted by the top 2 in spain getting stronger and stronger. I can't yet see Germany or Italy doing better overall in the near future though. Even with the team we have now I'd fancy our chances against most of them.

This season is a write off for English teams really(although I'm very happy about it). City and Chelski have no one but themselves to blame while Arsenal and ManU got almost the worst possible draw in the playoffs. I'm sure the overall performance will be much much better again next season.

The decline for English clubs started when Rafa left us

(ignoring chavs one a million cup run last season).

Fact.

It changes every year and Journos lead the charge with some article that's upended the next season

This year, I would say Germany is ahead of England in terms of how strong their top teams are: Bayern is stronger than Man U and Dortmund is better than City (they proved it quite convincingly, didn't they?). Italy is roughly on par with England - Juve is the only really strong team (although not on the level of Bayern, Barca and Madrid) and the rest of top teams are all in various stages of transition.

The english game needs a slap and a wake up call to sort itself out. I read somewhere the other day that over 60% of the players in the premier league are foreign. We need to sort out the foreign ownership and influx of foreign players. Would be nice if we had a system more like Germany's 🙁
What happens in a couple of yours IF, and it's a massive IF, the financial fair play rules kick in and our top teams can't go around the world cherry picking the best players? They've got fuck all coming through their academies, it'll implode.

I adore the German football system. Big stadiums, cheapish tickets, attractive football, loads of home grown talent. It's in the best condition overall from the big leagues at the moment imo.

The bolded part would play nicely in our favor.

I bet the German FA isn't run by blokes 80years old that haven't got a clue about football anymore. The game and everything that surrounds it have evolved, but our FA hasn't.
It seems their football has a lot going for it that the other big leagues could learn from.

I think an english team not getting to the semi's this year is just a blip though, I don't expect us to dominate next year but I bet we have at least one team in the semi's.

I thought the decline of the English teams in Europe started when Alonso left us and the threat of 50% tax for high earners appeared.

Oh and they go around selling beer and bratwurst on the stands.

Quality

These things go in cycles. For a while up until Heysel, English teams were winning everything in sight. The European ban put a stop to that for a fair old time, but then we forged ahead again. Now things may be swapping back, but eventually it'll be our turn again. So it goes.
