What to do about a problem like Moreno

I'm old school. First and foremost a defenders responsibility is to not make silly errors.

Every time I see this kid play he makes the most stupid, silly, irrational, aggressive, self sabotaging decisions and tackles that I have ever seen from a Liverpool defender. He's frequently ball watching, and caught out of position.

He bombs forward - is this his main attraction? He scores a goal every now and again. Could someone who knows more about him and his role than I tell me what I am not seeing? I don;t see every game, so someone please help me understand.

My own sentiment is that he could potentially cost us the final. He's that thick. I can see him lunging in again and giving a peno. Did you see the shove yesterday? definite penalty. We were lucky

I say drop and sell. Who could we replace him with it in the final (JK won't drop him of course?)

What does JK see in him?

The stats say he lays on more chances than any other back four player in the Prem, and Klopp does like his fullbacks to provide width in attack.

That said, I'm worried about the same things you are. I actually like him and think there is a player in there somewhere, but he isn't improving defensively at the rate we need him to.

He supports Coutihno well and is pacey, however, he makes JAR look like a shooting dead eye dick, cannot cross, and is redolent of a dog that chases cars down the street. Hopelessly indisciplined. That shove could have cost us the tie, he really needs a brain transplant. Cannot wait for Gomez to be back. He is a liability, I would sacrifice Milner and play him at LB if Henderson is available.

Play Gomez, a right footed central defender as a left back?
Not my first choice.

I have no real problem with Moreno atm however, his problems is his longevity. His speed won't save him forever.
He's still relatively young and if Klopp gets a summer with him he might just teach that dummy some positioning.

I think Klopp will buy a more defensive option for the left, but he will keep Moreno as the more attacking option. His aggression moving forward, like yesterday was great, but we also saw the stupid side to his game too. That seems to be more than a positioning issue that can be ironed out, he's indecisive and rash. As I said though, his energy and pace is more than useful.

He's a loose cannon, I'm always much happier when he gets pushed up as a winger. Dives in with insane tackles, gets caught upfield all the time, gets out jumped way too often on crosses.

Moreno has to 'bomb forward'.

We don't have a squad with any good wingers and it's a position Klopp has identified as a position he has to sign.

Once that happens we can judge Moreno properly as a fullback, because as it stands, he's being asked to cover the whole side of the pitch.

So yeah - we sign a left winger and reduce our reliance on Moreno offering that attacking outlet at every attack.

I dont mind Moreno. He occupies the full back and pushes the oppo winger back.
He causes so many problems going forward I can live with him missing at the back from time to time.
A better CB and a goalkeeper and we wont even notice.

I say give him time. Hes young.

If you want us keep playing gegenpressing then fullbacks like Moreno is a must or the system won't work. It is as simple as that. In gegenpressing it is more important for a fullback to be good in attack than in defense. He must help create chance after chance because our attacking players will very often make runs into the box. It is the fullbacks that should make the crosses.

It is also very important that our fullbacks can help out stop the attacks as high up the pitch as possible. That is why it is sometimes a big hole behind them. It is up to other players to cover for them. It is called gegenpressing all over the pitch.

Apologies I didn't actually answer the question the original poster asked.

Teach him to defend and not be thick.

What happens to Coutinho if Klopp signs a LW?
