What is it he does, really?
He was assistant manager during Benitez last year I think. What is his role now?
Motivating coach?

It's not my intention to offend Lee, I know he's from the city and loves this club. He was a decent player as well. But I just haven't heard anything positive nor negative about his coaching.

Why do people keep picking someone (ANYONE) and try a witch hunt on them?

We are SUPPORTERS for fucks sake.

Kenny must see something in him - he wouldn't be there otherwise.
Could it be a "for old times sake" thing.

I believe he's assistant manager, which basically amounts to Kenny's gopher, though he probably takes some part in the coaching as TBF he had a good rep for that before he went into general management.

If we needed a replacement I'd be after trying to poach Sir Gary Mac from GH at the Villa.

I don't think it's a witchhunt,Asbo..

I think we all want the manager to surround himself with the best people we can find.

Dunno if that's Sammy, but maybe...

Have you read Aldo's book?

Kenny does nothing for old times sake, he is lethal. If someones no good, or considered surplus to requirements they are gone, no matter who they are

Exactly. Ridiculous thread topic

I really don't see the point here. He's a coach. He coaches players.

And how many times do you hear about how individual coaches are doing? BREAKING NEWS: Sammy Lee led an ace 5 a side training session!

No.
OK.

But you must admit it's a bit weird that we're hearing a lot about Steve Clark's work but nothing about Lee. Before that during Benitez first years, Ayesteran's work was also well known.

I had Sammy as coach at a Footie school in the 80s. He was a nice lad.... Good at warm up and stuff, but when the real thing matters Ray Clemmence took over.

He has been around for a while and he has got some experience which must be valuable. He is as well loyal and a nice character.

I don't think anyone knows what the coaches do or who is good or who isn't.

Unless you're in the industry or have good contacts.

he is still listed as assistant manager on the official website with Clarke as coach but we can only speculate as to whether with Clarke it's really the other way around

The point is that the King brought Steve Clarke in despite the fact that Sammy Lee is already at the club. It's a perfectly legitimate question to ask.

Fair enough. I thought it was fairly obvious he has dropped down a notch in pecking order but maybe he's kept on as a mascot of some sort.

I think it's the "who would you replace him with" question that bugs people. The reason for the poll is to see if they'd rather have someone else. I know Hansen is a good friend of Dalglish and a defence expert. Maybe he would bring something to the table?
I'm not saying that Lee doesn't but I don't know what.

I find that insulting.

Sammy Lee honours with Liverpool:

Liverpool
Football League First Division (3): 1981–82, 1982–83, 1983–84
Football League Cup (4): 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984
European Cup (2): 1980–1981, 1983–1984

Sorry mate. I actually know the Lee's and scousers stick together 😉

He's a well-regarded coach.

He's part of Liverpool's "Old School".

He stood up to Joey Barton once.

Hansen has no desire to be involved in football as a manager/coach.
I know, heard him say it in several interviews. But somehow I feel like he would be the a great addition to the coaching staff.

It's actually the manager's job he has no interest in; he has suggested that he has no real interest in the football business, but I'm not sure he'd turn down a coaching job, especially at Liverpool.

I think Hansen is settled in a warm studio now, and has no interest in coming back to footy.

He and Kenny are best mates, and I am sure he has been sounded out already and said 'no thanks.'

The reason Jocky's set his face against becoming a manager is that he doesn't need the hassle, at least a proportion of which would also attach to the role of coach, so like others I suspect that's not going to be a possibility TBH. Besides, Clarke's playing position was fullback, so if he specialises in one area of the team I'd expect it to be the defence (I keep reading suggestions that the idea of three CBs came from him originally).

Lee's coaching was highly thought of with England as well as with us. I couldn't say in what respect(s) particularly, but I can believe he still has something to offer provided he's prepared to accept a bit of a diminution in status with Clarke's arrival.

I guess. A bit weird though that Sammy is still assistant manager considering Clarke's role.

Liverpool first-team coach Steve Clarke: the low-down on Kenny Dalglish's right-hand man
With Steve Clarke confirmed as Kenny Dalglish's No 2, Telegraph Sport looks at the Scotsman's past achievements and what his future at Liverpool could hold.

New beginnings: Steve Clarke's new role at Liverpool is his first since leaving West Ham last summer
By Rory Smith 10:13AM GMT 11 Jan 2011

How he works
The 47 year-old will function as a bridge between dressing room and Boot Room. He was counted as a confidante by many of Chelsea’s players during his years as assistant to Jose Mourinho (right, top) between 2004-08, while Gianfranco Zola (below) described his innovative training sessions as “brilliantâ€.

What he has done
Clarke made his name as a player at Chelsea but became more famous for his work as a coach under Mourinho, and was widely credited with a significant role in their consecutive title wins. His spell at West Ham was less successful, leaving Upton Park in June last year after Zola’s dismissal. He had a short spell as Newcastle caretaker manager after Ruud Gullit’s sacking in 1999.

What they say
Jose Mourinho: “If he had the chance to manage a club, even a big club like Chelsea, he would be ready for that. He is that good. He is an intelligent guy and always looking to improve. He is very open to co-operation and learning. He has a good relationship with the players, knows how to handle them. I think he is much, much better than many managers who are in charge of teams at the moment.â€

What it means
Although Clarke was out of work following his spell at West Ham, his appointment seems unlikely to be temporary. Should Dalglish not remain in place, Clarke’s presence at Anfield would be ideal for the 33-year-old Porto manager, Andre Villas Boas, his former colleague under Mourinho and one candidate for the long-term Liverpool post.

Coaching Career:

Teams managed
1998–1999 Newcastle United (assistant manager)
1999 Newcastle United (caretaker manager)
2004–2008 Chelsea (assistant manager)
2008–2010 West Ham United (assistant manager)
2011– Liverpool (first team coach) Weird

That still doesn't really provide an insight into what his role actually entails - what his responsibilities are.

I guess I always feel out of place in these threads because everyone talks about how coach X is good (or isn't) and who they'd like to see do what. Now I don't know what goes on at Melwood or on the training pitch - I can only make rather vague assumptions based on bits and pieces I've read.
