... were we playing yesterday? I missed the match and have only seen the 40-min highlights on the offal, but it looked to me like Gerrard, Yossi and Dirk were all playing centrally. But on paper that doesn't make any sense. Who was on the right? Was it 442 or 4231? Without getting into a Robinhood-style debate, can anyone enlighten me?

I think Yossi and Kuyt were meant to be interchanging (with Yossi mostly on the right), but Burnley were leaving a lot of space in the centre and Yossi is the most comfortable there, so they both attacked mostly through the middle. Gerrard played CM with Lucas.

gerrard played centre - centre midfield.

yossi played the most part behind torres

kuyt played his usual role which also sees him drifting in

there was some interchange between yossi and kuyt, probably more so than u see between gerrard and kuyt. although yossi looked better behind torres than kuyt did.

to all extent and purposes it was 4231 but gerrard was far more dynamic in centre midfield than the partnership of lucas and masch has been.

drop lucas, play masch and gerrard in the middle with yossi behind torres and and that's the best we have right now.

OK, thanks for the clarification. I'd like to see Yossi given a run in that central position, at least until Aquilani is back. As to who plays behind him, though, I'm not so sure. Mascherano is brilliant at playing a specific role, and against the best teams he's an absolute necessity, but against teams like Burnley, especially at home, I kind of prefer Lucas. He's a better passer than Mascher, and - reputation aside - I think even you would have to admit that he's been pretty solid and consistent so far this season.

That avatar is eerily reminiscent of Brendan.

Umm. Kuyt was in the middle more than he usually is. Benayoun was out right but cut in. And everyone was Interchanging yesterday. It was quite intelligent stuff. Besides Torres spending a lot of time outside of the box.

Everyone was drawn into the middle because that's where all the space was, which we exploited wonderfully well

As for the formation it was a 4-4-2 with Gerrard in the middle, Kuyt up top and Yossi on the right - but he generally had a free role.

disagree, It was the 4-2-3-1 with, Lucas and Gerrard in the middle, and Riera, Kuyt, Yossi the three in that order

So 90 minutes of a game passed and half of you don't even know what frnation we played....haha pathetic!!

Yeah 'cos formations are completely rigid, set in stone systems, you fucking plank.

So what formation DID we play then, Slugs?

I thought it was simply a 4-4-2 ith gerrard given license to occupy space high up the pitch but once the game started the front 6 were moving all over the pitch.

Anyone suggesting we played a 4-4-2....

Please post the name of the second striker who played with Torres...... Yossi did not, Dirk did not, Stevie G did not, maybe you though Carra or Skrtel was the second in a 4-4-2?

We did not even play a 4-4-1-1 for crying out loud.

Yeah, it was kind of weird, sort of a 4-2-3-1, but without a genuine right winger. Both Yossi and Dirk played mostly in the middle. Johnson was quite enough to threaten Burnley defense from the right flank by himself, with occasional help from either Yossi or Dirk.

Don't know if this would work against better teams, but against Burnley it was quite effective.

It was meant to be Dirk playing behind Torres with Yossi on the right, that was what they kept reverting to.
However it should have been Yossi playing behind Torres and just left Dirk out on the right.
Still, it worked as it was, so who the fuck am I?

Torres spent too much time out of the box and fannying around out wide

Opta says we spent 81% of our possession going through the middle - way too high if we were playing against a better team. Gerrard & Lucas both played high up the pitch so a little bit different to having Masher in there (although he too has been more dynamic this season) and our defence held a high line too.

The most coherent answer so far. Thanks Vlad.

Did Lou Macari piss anyone else off commentating on Setanta?
[/quote]

Yes, he pissed me off no end. He's the most biased, Scum-loving commentator I've ever heard. He spent the whole 1st half slagging off Gerrard. At least Pat Dolan had a go at him at half time.

He spent the first 30 minutes giving out about our tactics, formations, season so far etc. Boring cunt.

He had a serious problem with the positions Kuyt was taking up, didn't open his mouth then when he scored.
