what formation do we actually play ?

i always find it hard to work out what formation we play . ok we've four at the back and then gerrard and lucas seem to sit infront . But where does the third midfielder play ? Today henderson seemed to be playing as a right midfielder . Why was that ? to protect johnson or to not get into space that coutinho might use on the other side ?

and the front 3 , i guess they are allowed to move around alot , certainly coutinho seems to be allowed to go where he wants .

Don't get me wrong , i understand that a formation changes many times during a game and constant movement is hard to defend against but i wonder if ours gets the best out of our midfield . It also seems to leave us vulnerable on the break , teams always seem to get players in the hole between defence and midfield .
 
We don't play a rigid 4-3-3 formation that's for sure.
It sometimes ends up looking like we're playing 4-4-2.
Hendo was tasked with covering the right flank. Coutinho had somewhat of a free role to the left. He was allowed to drift inwards.
 
Yeah, pretty much 4-4-2. When defending it was all very clear: Coutinho covering the left flank and Henderson the right, Lucas and Gerrard in the middle, Aspas and Sturridge up front. But when we had prolonged periods of possession Coutinho usually moved to the middle of the pitch, Henderson moved a bit infield too and both fullbacks pushed very high up, so it looked like an "Italian style" 4-3-1-2. An interesting, fluid formation and one I certainly didn't expect from Rodgers.

Also interesting that he made only one substitution and that Allen didn't play a single minute.

Aspas and Sturridge had a good understanding playing together. They will create more goals if they keep playing together.
 
nor borini ...i'd be very surprised if he's here beyond this season . time will tell but the 26m or whatever they cost is looking like a waste .
 
I'm sure Allen will get his chances this season, probably his game for Wales in midweek had a lot to do with it.
 
Feels like a 4231 to me, but our most advanced midfielder sometimes drops deep and makes it a 433
 
Today we seemed to start out with a 4-2-3-1 with Aspas behind Sturridge and Lucas and Gerrard holding.
Second half we seemed to move more to a 4-3-3 with Henderson on the right of a midfield three.
The front three seemed to then stretch out a bit wider giving Countinho responsibility for helping Enrique.
Coutinho switched to the centre when Sterling came on
