Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he can sympathise with Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez's current plight, and believes that the Merseysiders have been the victims of some bad luck this season.

Liverpool travel to Debrecen this week facing elimination from the Champions League. The Frenchman does not think the Anfield outfit's fans deserve to see their club in such a precarious situation.

"I have a huge sympathy for Liverpool," he told the Gunners' official website.

"I can elaborate because first of all it is a hugely historical club.

"And I have a massive respect for their fans who, for me, have always been outstanding."

Wenger feels that those fans have become a little quieter than usual in recent weeks, as the pressure of an extended run of poor form has made everyone at Anfield much more anxious than usual.

"I must say I watched a little bit of the [2-2 draw at home to] Manchester City and their fans looked to be a little bit affected by fear as well because it was the first time I saw them a bit quiet," he added.

"As well, I feel Liverpool have been a little bit unlucky in the last six weeks; they do not get from the games what they deserve."

It's a much better sign than them laughing.

...which they do when the camera's off, I guess.

he no longer sees us as a threat to his champions league qualification.

Sunderland didn't need the intervention of a beachball to beat them.

Or not, I guess. Every day is self-inflicted masochism day on 6CM.

no they didn't jj.

i think arsenal are the sort of team that every now and again will come unstuck on a winters afternoon to teams like sunderland. they over complicate some things in their game and that will always leave them vulnerable to a team such as sunderland.

all said and done i don't really want wenger's pity.

Wenger is in the same position as Rafa, they havent won a trophy for years. Rafa did the same kind of comparisons.
They're under massive pressure to get results and they are just trying to find excuses for themselves.
"Look, our job is not that easy", who are they trying to bluff? Their owners? the fans?

They hardly managed two shots all afternoon on Sunderland's goal ... nothing to do with Winter or over complicating play. They desperately needed the beachball.

i'm sure if they hoofed the ball to the big man who'd knock it down they'd manage a few more shots on goal however ugly it may be.

overcomplicate was probably the wrong word, i probably should have used pretty.

I am in a very small minority of LFC fans who like Wenger. He's an excellent manager, his team play beautiful football and he shows far better sportsmanship than many other managers. He can be a cunt at times but all managers of opposition teams can be.

I know loads of people who like Wenger, me included.

The test of being sporting and gentlemenly is when one does it. Wenger does it when things have gone his way anyway. When he's suffered he's almost as bitter and biased as Warnock.

You could say that about most of the top managers, they all go a bit mental when they think things have gone against them.

Well, if that's the case, don't single out Winger. Actually, Benitez has resisted most opportunities this season - the beachball among them - to moan. It's been most unusual but I hope it continues.

Hmm, maybe. I'd rather he moaned more and we lost less though.
