I don't know what to make of it. Can it be a put down, a jinx or a derisory comment!

Wayne Rooney feels Liverpool can mount a genuine threat to Manchester United's hopes of adding another Premier League title to their collection.

Rooney, usually reluctant to offer Liverpool any form of praise, has been impressed by a summer recruitment programme at Anfield that has seen Kenny Dalglish sign Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing. That represents almost £50m worth of transfer business and, with Dalglish looking to bring in further players, Rooney thinks Liverpool could re-establish themselves as authentic title contenders 21 years after they last won the championship.

"I think they will challenge this time," the former Everton striker said. "They have made some really good signings, British players, and under Kenny Dalglish I'm sure they will be trying harder than they ever have done, fighting to be up there. They will think they have a chance of winning the title next season."

I think the last line tells you everything you need to know, "They will think they have a chance." Fuck off Shrek.

Nothing wrong with that ... we know any team needs to have a positive attitude if they are going to win it. He also said "I think they will challenge this time."

Ginsoak's said the same. I was putting it down to mind games until Rooney came out with the same thing. To play mind games you have to have one first.

Fergie's given them the lead.

He's not soft, whenever Liverpool of teh last 20 years have had pressure on them to perform in teh league, they've faltered. So his best chance of getting us to fuck up without them having to even beat us is us beating ourselves again, by buckling under the pressure. Therefore by assuring he & his players, & the odd journo no doubt, apply that pressure he's simply turning up the heat of expectation.

No brainer on his part, but I think he underestimates Kenny's effect on morale, & it'll bite him on the arse by enthusing the players with confidence.

For fucks sake, Fergie isn't some sort of Derren Brown of the football world, he can't implant thoughts in players and managers minds.

He got all that shit from Keegans mental breakdown, and it was FUCK all to do with Fergies mind games, it was just Keegan bottling it again.

WTF are you blathering on about?

I didnt once say he'd implanted thoughts in their minds. I said they've taken his lead. He's quite obviously trying to increase the pressure on us by ramping up expectations, which is a sensible thing to do. To that end I have no doubt he tells certain players to say certain things & I am sure his friends in the press will follow suit.

I'm not saying he's Derren Brown, just that he is predictable in how he attempts to rile opponents, he always has been.

Im with Foxy, off the back off one positive liverpool comment from Fergie and co, Sky sports will be frothing at the gash, its standard.

I think Rooney's comment has more to do with British players' over-estimation of they and their compatriots' abilities. It's like Gerrard's praise of Joe Cole last summer.
