Wanyama - Southampton deal confirmed

We're being linked with him, but we're linked with shitloads of players so it's hard to know if there's anything in it.

I rate him highly. Very good player and would give us physical presence in midfield, something we lack imo.
Lucas, Allen and Henderson are tidy footballers, good on the ball etc, but you can't help but think it's a bit samey samey.

I thought he was so highly rated that the big teams were interested; but yet now we are competing with Southampton and Cardiff for him. Did his stock fall?

Victor Wanyama’s proposed move to Southampton collapsed on Sunday after the Celtic midfielder failed to agree personal terms.

The Premiership club were given permission to open talks with the 21-year-old on Saturday night after Celtic accepted a fee close to £12million (about Sh1.6 billion).

According to reports in the Scottish press, Wanyama’s representatives were far from impressed by the deal on offer and Saints know they will have to significantly increase the personal terms to have any hope of signing him.

Wanyama has a positive feeling about interest from Cardiff and hopes the Welsh club also have a bid accepted.

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay is desperate to sign the Celtic star but his club may see a fee of around £11m as their limit. Wanyama is in no rush to leave Parkhead and won’t be forced to go unless the deal suits him.

Wanyama shot to fame in Celtic’s run to the last 16 of the Champions League, scoring in the 2-1 win over Barcelona.

His displays at the heart of Celtic midfield has also not gone unnoticed with analysts likening his style to Ghana international and Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien.

He has been a hot property in the transfer market with several clubs including Arsenal, Cardiff, Stoke, Galatasaray and Inter Milan, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool all being linked with him. On Friday, Wanyama told Daily Nation that he was yet to make contact with any club but has only read reports in the media.

“I’m on holiday. I only learnt about it (transfer talk) through the media. The deal (with Southampton) is still far,” Wanyama said.

Should a move to any of the EPL sides mature, Wanyama will make history by becoming the first Kenyan to play in the coveted league.

Have people actually seen him play a lot?
I've seen him play a lot in the SPL but was reluctant to praise him as the standard is so low; however the 2 games against Barca last season showed what a talent he is. He strolled through the game Hamannesque but yet kept a very tight rein on Iniesta and Xavi. He looked so comfortable in both matches and IMO was man-of-the-match* in both games.

*joint motm with the goalie Forster in the away game.

It'll still be a risk for us without having seen him play against more teams of a high standard. Remember Momo vs Barca? He was the best player on the pitch!!

There's always an inherent risk if you're signing a player from a lesser league though it just depends on how much money you're prepared to speculate that he's gonna be a top player.

Anything under £12m and I reckon he's worth the risk anything above £15m and I'd leave it.

He does look a good player.
If we're spending 7m on a Spanish second division player to bank on his potential I'm sure we won't be bulking at Wanyama's price, though resale value might be something the owners might be concerned about.

Is wanyama that special beef that's been all stroked and massaged and wotnot? If so I'm all for it.

Celtic blast back at Victor Wanyama's agent over pay claims as star's future hangs in the balance

CLAIMS from Wanyama's camp that the Kenyan had gone two years without a pay rise prompted an angry reaction from Parkhead last night.

THE relationship between Victor Wanyama and Celtic was breaking down last night in a row between the wantaway Kenyan’s camp and the SPL champions.
Record Sport understands Wanyama’s advisers have infuriated the powers that be inside Parkhead by launching a high-profile campaign to land their man a money-spinning move out of Glasgow.
This comes amid claims down south that Wanyama’s £12.5million move to Southampton collapsed because the 21-year-old’s representatives were demanding a £1m fee.
Yesterday Barcelona-based agent Ivan Modia poured fuel on the fire by saying Wanyama has no interest in discussing a move to St Mary’s – and insisting his client had already lost out when denied the chance to join big-spending QPR last summer.
Modia also said Wanyama has gone two years at Celtic – where Neil Lennon tagged his star at £25m – without a pay rise.
This has outraged chief executive Peter Lawwell who saw a number of improved contract offers over the last 12 months turned down.
Sources close to Lawwell believe Wanyama’s advisers booted out a bumper deal that would have doubled the value of the player’s contract in a bid to force his sale.
In a tersely-worded statement a club spokesman said last night: “These negotiations like any others, are carried out by Celtic in a proper, private and professional manner.
“Celtic carries out its business with integrity, we work to the highest standards and in the interests of the club, our supporters and indeed our players. We do not need to comment any further.”
But privately Celtic are understood to be simmering with anger at the way Wanyama’s agents have gone about their business.
In the meantime the club have kicked a £10m bid from Cardiff into touch in the hope another bidder might match the record-breaking Southampton offer.
But the fear remains any deal might be scuppered by the exorbitant demands of Wanyama’s agents.
Modia appeared to suggest yesterday Wanyama’s own cash demands caused the stumbling block.
He said: “We’re not in talks with Southampton and have not been since their final offer more than two weeks ago.
“The news of the fee being agreed may be coming out now but we see little sense in a fee being agreed if there is no reasonable prospect of the player’s terms being met.
“To suggest we’re talking with Southampton is false, their offer was way below Victor’s expectations. There’s no chance of him signing the deal on offer and both Celtic and Southampton were informed some time ago.
“The player will not be forced into a corner to accept the Southampton deal just because it is good for Celtic.
“Remember he has been with the club for two years now – without a pay rise – and has given them wonderful service since he arrived.
“Added to this is the fact that by Celtic refusing him permission to join QPR last summer, Victor lost more than £1m in potential earnings – yet he kept his mouth shut and continued to be a model professional.”
Wanyama, signed from Belgian side Beerschot in 2011, will hold out for more potential escape routes, knowing his bridges with Celtic have been burned.
Modia added: “We know there’s interest from elsewhere and Victor is obviously open to those prospects. He hopes Celtic will adopt a more reasonable approach and take into account the service he’s given the club so far.”
