Liverpool Talks With One of 'Hottest Prospects in Europe' Confirmed
Posted on 15 March 2011
Liverpool and Newcastle have been confirmed as potential suitors for Holland international striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel, after the player’s representative claimed both clubs have been in contact with FC Utrecht over the possibility of sealing his signature.
The 22-year-old attacker has been sidelined through injury, but recently returned to the first-team as he continues to build a reputation as one of the most exciting prospects in world football.
Van Wolfswinkel has netted 20 goals in just 30 appearances during the 2010-11 season, boasting an impressive goal ratio that earned him a cap for the Dutch national side. 17 goals from his last 24 matches have made him the club’s number one forward, assisting FC Utrecht to seventh in the Eredivisie last season.
However, such a blistering start to his professional career have propelled the forward into the sights of some of Europe’s biggest clubs, and van Wolfswinkel’s representative has told sport.co.uk that his client would love a switch to the Premier League.
"We are still working towards a move this summer but I have nothing finalised yet,†Louis Laros revealed about a potential switch to Liverpool.
“In the winter break both [Liverpool and Newcastle] they would follow him and keep an eye on him. In the next coming months we will see, so I will wait for contact.
"If there was the possibility of the Premier League Ricky would love it. But obviously we must respect the club and what they want to do in the summer. Ricky is still young and he wants to better himself, so if a club offers him a deal he will look at it. But it depends on the club, the manager, and the ambitions of the club."
Liverpool have become favourites to sign the exciting prospect, but manager Kenny Dalglish is said to be more focused on strengthening defensively and in the midfield after spending £60 million on Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll in January.
Newcastle have the void of Carroll’s departure to fill, with boss Alan Pardew being handed the vast majority of the £35 million made from the deal to replace the towering England international.
It is rumoured that van Wolfswinkel would prefer a move to Anfield, but Newcastle’s ability to guarantee him first-team football may factor into his decision. Both clubs are wary that the interest extends beyond just two clubs, with major European forces such as Tottenham Hotspur also linked with a move for the exciting youngster.
Back in January the striker was also linked with a move to both Liverpool, who Utecht had just played the Europe League, and Tottenham, with the players agent once again revealing that his client was open to a move away from Holland.
“He is eager to move and he finds Tottenham and Liverpool both very interesting opportunities,†Laros added. “In the game against Liverpool he got injured, and he is still a couple of weeks off being fully fit, but everything has gone well. But as I said, I have not had an offer from either club, so weare waiting.â€
