Liverpool have seemingly been given the green light to renew their interest in Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.
The Reds were forced to make a public apology and end their pursuit of van Dijk in June amid suggestions of an illegal approach for the player.
While the Dutchman remains Jurgen Klopp's number one centre-back target, Liverpool will only make a bid should they be invited to by Southampton.
And Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino – a former Liverpool defender – has now hinted the defender could be allowed to depart in the New Year.
Asked if van Dijk would still be a Southampton player beyond the next transfer window, Pellegrino said on Thursday: “I don’t know. I can’t control the market.
“You never know, because when we talk about money everybody has got a price.
“The budget is to sign players and the biggest teams have got money to try to sign players.
“I can’t decide about that. This is a question for our owners.
“Everybody is focused on their area, to try to bring the best players possible for their club. It is something that happens every single transfer window.
“We have got a lot of good players and most of the teams want to sign them.”
Van Dijk is set to be in opposition to Liverpool on Saturday when Southampton visit Anfield for a Premier League encounter.
