Deserves his own thread too I reckon. Worth every penny. From the second he set foot in the club our whole defensive unit has improved immeasurably. We actually look hard to score against now. Remarkable turnaround.
Every time the ball used to go in the box or the opposition had a corner I'd be shitting myself. Now there is an air of calm composure and steely commitment from keeper thoughout the back four. Magnificent and a future captain. Probably in the last three months before he leaves for Barcelona.

Yup. Worth every penny. But we couldn’t have defended as well as we did had it not been for Lovren and the fullbacks.
Anyway. VVD should be our main man at the back for the next 5-6 years. He really was worth the fee.

He's been very good

We overpay for most players. It’s what happens when you’re a top side that others know can Take advantage of. So you can say that about most of our players (they’d have gone to another team lower down the league cheaper).
But he’s one of the best in the world. We might have overpaid but it was money well spent.
Your argument was hat he only had one leg to stand on and that we were completely ripped off. Very different.

We got 50 million quid for Benteke and Ibe. You can't really make value judgements anymore other than are they the best we could have in that position. The answer is clearly yes.

I don't understand ?

We still overpaid.

But we underpaid for Robertson and TAA was free. So it's all good.
Our whole back five cost a total of £107.7 million. Guardiola has spent nearly £300 million on his defence.
Laporte was £57 million on his own. In comparison Klopp has finally crafted his own defence for a pretty good outlay in my book.

I remember someone (me) saying that he'd probably be worth every pound spend, as he looked mostly tremendous for Soton. That poster (me) was right, or at least so it seems.

Others (rosco) wasn't. He (rosco) was wrong.

Virgil is a big success already and his introduction has really tightened our back-line and given us another dimension going forward. Who cares about numbers anyways.. it was a sound move to buy him at the given price in the market.

I like how VVD can be seen instructing our defenders to relax and wait for the attacker to move or for our other defenders/midfielders to get into a position to receive the ball. The out ball will appear and not to panic. Karius has definitely benefited from VVD's cool demeanour.

I really hope he scores against Everton again this weekend.

..btw Christensen has been poor for a month or so now, and though Chelsea is obv not a club where players shine at the moment, he needs to get his act together soon.. soKloppcanbuyhimandpartnerhimwithVirgil*IMOUT*

He has been a revelation. Would be nice if he could get some more threatening headers in at corners but it was much more important that we he has straightened out the defence around him. Imagine how could he could make an actual good CB if this is how good he makes Lovren play!

He did make a few errors last night but we can forgive him as it did not lead to anything bad and also because the camera shots on him showed a man with an expression that said just ... WOW !! at the atmosphere and occasion. Still he looks as cool as ever despite the opposition.

Also on the night we played watford i was coming back from the airport and listening to the radio commentry of the game. Not joking but i did not hear VVDs name mentioned for nearly 20 mins i reckon in the 2nd half..actually thought Matip was playing by himself. That says a lot about the mans positioning.

He's been good so far, but yeah thought Lovren was the better of the two last night.
Mentioned a couple of issues in the match thread. He steams way out to try and nick the ball, but he was turned easily at least twice last night

A small issue, but one that could be punished very easily at the highest level

Weren't we playing at the highest level? He made maybe 1-2 small mistakes but he was boss. Again.

If we get passed city, I don't doubt isco/Ronaldo/Messi/dembele might punish it.

Errors are errors. Because they don't get punished every time doesn't mean it doesn't need working on or highlighted.

That was the highest level.

That was the highest level.
Notice the word "could"

I'm just pointing out a thing he did in the city game that he fucked up twice with, got turned, leaving Jesus a free run. Thankfully he was bailed out.

We getting like RAWK now? Where criticism isn't allowed

Criticise anything/anyone you like as far as I'm concerned. I was just a little bemused at the implication that City aren't at the highest level. But it turns out you didn't mean that, so all good!

Apart from their goal, City only had two other shots on target (green arrows in the graphic on the left), both from outside the area. They managed five shots off target (red arrows) and saw 12 of their 20 shots blocked. Pep Guardiola's side put in 27 crosses from open play (right-hand graphic) but none of them were successful

[article]Liverpool U18 coach Steven Gerrard felt Virgil van Dijk was key to last night's Champions League victory at Manchester City.

Van Dijk was at fault for City's goal but overall the Dutch defender impressed at the Etihad.

And Gerrard says the centre-half has turned Liverpool around following his £75m move from Southampton in January.

“I think this Liverpool team, with the arrival of Van Dijk, have found a big piece in the jigsaw," Gerrard said on BT Sport.

“I think they've always looked dangerous going forward under Jurgen (Klopp) since the moment he came through the door.

"They've always looked threatening, they've always taken the game to the opposition teams.

“But they've had a weakness and everyone's been criticising them at the back.

“I think the arrival of Van Dijk has had such a big lift on everyone else around him.

"You could see him controlling the back four today, organising everyone.

“He's lifted (Dejan) Lovren, he's helping the two full-backs out immensely and I think he's even helping the goalkeeper."[/article]

Hes elevated Lovren for sure. This is the Lovren we bought from Saints.

And Karius, Trent and Robertson to a lesser extent. 75m is peanuts really when we look back on it. Add kKeita to this and a holding MF and we won't be a million miles away.
