[article]This season has been a fantastic one for me on the pitch. I’ve made my first-team debut, scored 30 goals for the youth team, signed my first professional contract and shared success with my team-mates, going on a great run in the FA Youth Cup and lifting the Lancashire FA Pro-Youth Cup.

But off the pitch I’ve been hiding the real me and who I really am. I’ve known my whole life that I’m gay, and I now feel that I’m ready to come out and be myself.

It’s a step into the unknown being one of the first footballers in this country to reveal my sexuality,
but I’ve been inspired by Josh Cavallo, Matt Morton and athletes from other sports, like Tom Daley, to have the courage and determination to drive change.

In reaching this point, I’ve had some of the best support and advice from my family, my Club, my agent and Stonewall, who have all been incredibly pro-active in putting my interests and welfare first. I have also confided in my team-mates in the youth team here at Blackpool, and they too have embraced the news and supported my decision to open up and tell people.

I’ve hated lying my whole life and feeling the need to change to fit in. I want to be a role model myself by doing this.

There are people out there in the same space as me that may not feel comfortable revealing their sexuality. I just want to tell them that you don’t have to change who you are, or how you should be, just to fit in.

You being you, and being happy, is what matters most.

It’s crazy that’s it’s not wider. There must be hundreds of gay footballers throughout the top divisions living in fear. Fear of arsehole fans. These fans will make some clubs look right cunts when they play Blackpool.
Evra is the gay whisperer. He knows at least 2 in every team.

There's nothing wrong with being gay, the more that come out. The less of a stigma it will become.

Good for him ! that’s not been easy at all for him.
Hoping he is a massive turning point of help, for those who live in fear of being themselves in sport/ football
and in turn he can live his life in peace and be left to play the game he obviously loves.

I hope some more players come out now in quick succession, just so this lad isn't properly targeted.

Tbh we need a big prem star to come out

This will force clubs to confront many wider social issues regarding tolerance.

Reminds me of the GOP when Dick Cheney’s daughter came out as a lesbian. The bilious stuff from the swivelled-eyed loons was toned down a might.

I can‘t wait until he reveals his partner.

I so hope it‘s someone like Reo-Coker or John Walker.

Finally! It’s insane how long it took for someone to come out after Fashanu. I hope football is ready this time. This kid seems like a real talent; only a matter of time before he plays in the Premier League - and I would bet a few others will come out in the next year.

But it kind of is… Do you know of any professional footballer in Sweden or other Northern European country who came out?
Hitzelsperger?
Glenn Hysén's son also. But I'm not sure if he ever was a professional footballer.

It's amazing how far things have come in a short space of time. It's amazing.

homophobia is making it's way back in America at the moment though, through a lot of political stuff - "you're making my kid gay in school by being too accepting" kind of nonsense.

Good man, i hope he’s pleasantly surprised by the huge majority of people that have no problem with someone being gay.

Shame for him that he waited until after signing a new contract & boot deal. Wonder if he was concerned. Also notable he’s done it at the end of the season. But huge respect and i hope fans give him a great reception to normalise.

He's 17, and I'm sure the boot and contract were done so it wasn't something that could be used against him like "he got a better deal because..." type allegations.

The timing is good, won't be a new story heading into the new season.

He's been advised well.

What do you mean in a short space of time? It's been really slow, and it's more amazing that because it hasn't happened, that it's still a big deal.

The vocal minority will have a go, and they'll get all the press. I'm glad a pro footy player has finally come out but there's some proper dickheads who watch footy. It's gonna be depressing for a bit.
