Xabi Alonso's time at Liverpool appears to be drawing to a close, with latest press reports saying that he will sign for Real Madrid by the end of the week.

But the Daily Mail are claiming that Rafael Benitez will spend some of his transfer fee on Wigan midfielder Lee Cattermole and Hull defender Michael Turner.

Cattermole is being valued at £12m - a huge increase on the £3.5m he cost Wigan from Middlesbrough a year ago.

Turner would cost a more reasonable £5.5m, but neither impress the fans who were hoping to see serious bids made for David Silva and David Villa.
 
Neither of these are bad players to be fair. Cattermole would be a big step down from Alonso though

I suggested him as a replacement for Lucas last season. Sadly, it looks like we're losing our best CM rather than our worst, so I don't think Danny's quite up to filling those boots.

Nope, good player but we moved on and don't need him going on about the foreign lads if he doesn't get a game. Anyway, rather have him scoring winners against UTD with other teams.
 
There's a rumour going round that the club's team concerned with sorting out accommodation etc for new players have been told to prepare for an incoming signing who's flying in from abroad. As for the Mail, didn't they link us with David Wheaton a while ago?

I think I would probably agree (apart from the foreign lads part - I think he was just upset then).
I always liked Murphy and I still do but the idea of bringing him back just doesn't seem quite right.

I know experience can do the team some good but Murphy isn't really in the Gary Mac class

Hmmm. 'Abroad' is a big place. Very few of our signings these days don't fly in from abroad!

And yeah we were linked to him. Not sure it was the Mail but I can believe it was

Yes, thanks for that. I'm sorry I don't know the specific country - I shouldn't have bothered to have posted. Some signings do fly in from London and elsewhere, by the way, hence the reference.

I can't think of anywhere where I would actually hope it to be to be honest! Every country we have bought players from has been with mixed results to say the least.

For me Cattermole is only a reasonable signing if we lose Xabi - there arent many around in the way of combative midfields who can actually pass a ball as well.

Turner doesnt fulfill any of our needs - its not as if he's a 19/20 yr old who'll be prepared to sit on the bench for a couple of years.
