TWENTY-TWO Merseyside Police officers and community support officers (PCSOs) continue to serve despite having been convicted of crimes, official figures reveal.

Five officers have been convicted of assault and one of causing death by dangerous driving. It is not known what offences the remaining 14 were convicted of.

It may be the case that some of the officers received their convictions before becoming serving officers.

The figures were released in response to a Freedom of Information Request which revealed that more than 900 law enforcers across the UK’s forces have been convicted of breaking the law.

Among the offences by officers of other forces are burglary, robbery, supply of drugs, domestic violence, forgery and perverting the course of justice.

One officer at the Devon and Cornwall force was convicted of burglary as a teenager.

Guidance says potential recruits with certain convictions – including burglary – should be rejected, except in “exceptional circumstances”.

The Metropolitan Police, the UK’s largest force, has the highest number of staff convicted of an offence, with 356 officers and 41 PCSOs.

Most of the UK police convictions are for traffic offences such as speeding and drink-driving, but some offences are more minor – the records show a South Yorkshire Police officer was convicted of fishing without a licence.

Home Office guidelines issued in 2003 say police officers should have “proven integrity”.
