Rafael Benitez has hailed Chelsea striker Fernando Torres as "amazing" - at defending corners.
Interim Blues boss Benitez attempted to deflect more criticism of Torres's wretched form in front of goal.

"It's not just scoring goals," Benitez said, discussing his fellow Spaniard's latest performance at West Ham. "We changed his position in corners, for example. If you analyse the corners against, he was amazing. Two or three times he's cleared the ball and afterwards was just doing man to man because it's what he had to do."
The Chelsea boss went on: "So, he's helping the team, in this case to defend. As a striker, you like him to score goals. Winning is the main thing. Fernando will be an important player for us, is an important player for us."
He added: "We had a training session with finishing and Fernando scored a lot of goals.
"I think he has more confidence and his team-mates know that he's trying very hard and that is the main thing for me."
There are suggestions Torres's days at Stamford Bridge could be numbered but the former Liverpool star has insisted he wants to stay. Juan Mata also defended his team-mate and fellow Spaniard.
"Of course we want to score more," he said.
"If you want to win, you have to score. But not only the strikers score.
"The midfielders and defenders from set-pieces need to score."

I read somewhere the other day that 1 in 50 premier league corners results in a goal. I've decided to only be happy we've won one if we're trying to run down the clock.

I'm sure years ago, people used to score loads from corners and free kicks, it seems these days it's absolutely rarity. Maybe I imagined it.

I'm trying to come up with goals that I can remember us scoring direct from a corner...

Tommy Smith, Rome 77. Alan Hansen, League Cup Final replay, 81 - I think that was a corner. Aldo, Vs Milwall away, FA Cup, 198something. Skrtyl, Vs City, this season.

After that, I'm struggling... 🙂

Hyypia scored two wonderful goals from corners in Champions League QF

I can't remember specific ones but Hyypia scored quite a number directly from corners (and free kicks). It's a shame we haven't had anyone with that heading ability since.

Blimey, the old memory is packing up! I dimly recall we actually had a tactic that worked for a couple games that involved a player standing in front of the keeper and someone else heading it in - was it first Kuyt against Tim Howard?

Biggest problem for scoring from corners these days is that defenders can commit fouls all day long and it never gets called. We should probably go back to taking short corners all the time, like the old days.

I immediately think of Berbatov's first goal in the 3-2 at OT a few years back when he scored a hat-trick. Torres' defending at the corner for that goal was fucking shite.

A no show for Drogbas CL dinner tonight in honour of the team.
Doesnt sound like he wants to be part of the Chelsea team.
