Fernando Torres flies to Spain for second opinion on groin problem
• Injured Liverpool striker sees specialist in Valencia
• Torres and Steven Gerrard may play against Birmingham

Andy Hunter guardian.co.uk, Friday 6 November 2009 Article history

Liverpool's concerns over the fitness of Fernando Torres have deepened after the striker flew to visit a specialist in Valencia for a second opinion on the hernia problem that has plagued him throughout Liverpool's desperate run of one win in eight games.

Earlier in the day he had visited a private clinic on Merseyside for a scan on his groin, although that appointment was arranged before his 87-minute appearance against Lyon in the Champions League on Wednesday and has been a post-match routine since he developed the problem on international duty last month.

With Steven Gerrard, who has missed Liverpool's last four matches with a groin injury, also being assessed on a day-by-day basis, the club have delayed a decision on whether to send the pair for operations in the hope that their captain and leading striker can help lift their season at home to Birmingham City on Monday. The international break which follows that game – it is three weeks before Liverpool play again in Europe – affords the club an opportunity to soften the impact should either Torres or Gerrard fail to improve.

"Fernando played with pain, and after the game he still had the same problems that have troubled him for a few weeks," said Benítez of his compatriot's display in Lyon, where Liverpool's failure to win pushed them closer to elimination from the Champions League at the group stage. "He wants to wait, rather than have an operation. He wants to work with the physios to try to solve his problems, but still he has pain. He told me he needed to keep stopping during the game because of the pain. Whether there is the need for him or Steven to have an operation is a decision we will probably not take straight away. We must see how they can improve, and by how much. Then we will decide about any possible operation."

Glen Johnson, Martin Skrtel, Fabio Aurelio and Nabil El Zhar, who all missed the Lyon game through injury, have returned to light training.

Would it be cycnical to say that Rafa is milking these injuries a bit just to ensure that neither Torres or Gerrard have to play in the upcoming Internationals?

I don't think he is, but if he is, I hope it works this time, because it usually doesn't. Ferguson is the master at that.

I think he's milking Gerrard's injury a bit, but Fernando's sounds serious. Hernia's can only be repaired with surgery, and he seems to be getting scans from everyone in England, and now in Spain.

It's sickening though, just look at the season Torres is having with his injuries, it's unreal. A goal per game in the league, almost a goal per game so far.

🙁

According to Liverpool.no, it will be decided today if Torres needs an operation.

If he needs it, as they think, the question is wheter Rafa will play him against Brum and then hope he can recover in two weeks.

The recovery period is determind by how severe the hernia is, i e Alan Shearer was out for 7 days.
If Torres injury isn't that bad, he has a chance of making the match against City in 2 weeks.

I hate to say it because there's not really a good perspective to be found on all of this, but if he needs the op he should have it during the international break and be done with it. Better to lose him for a couple of weeks than put up with this for the rest of the season.

Whoops!Thanks for that..

If he needs it, he should have it asap. The sooner we get him 100% fit the better with Citeh, Everton and Arsenal on the horizon in the next 6 weeks.

It seems a bit odd to fly him to Valencia for a second opinion. Are there no other suitable specialists in England?

I just want all of our players to stay fit. Is that to much to ask?

Any news on Riera's situation?

Not the most spectacular player but alongside Benayoun and Johnson he's one of few capable of turning a defender. I think we've missed him.

how likely is it torres will face brum?
[/quote]

I don't think it's likely at all.

We HAVE got to beat Birmingham at Anfield even without Torres and Gerrard playing mind. So I'd rather we made sure they recovered once and for all really.

Maybe Aquilani will start though. That would be brilliant.

Aquillaini might get 3 minutes somewhere, seeing as though we are nursing him back in. If the non-contact Champions League is too much for him, the brutal Premiership might be a big ask.

I actually felt we missed Kelly for the Lyon game.

A big cudos to the young lad.

I've got very high hopes for him, he really seems like one who could make the grade.

Liverpool blow as Fernando Torres could be out for three months
Published 21:00 06/11/09 By By David Maddock

Liverpool have been dealt another devastating blow, after Fernando Torres was ordered to take a complete break for at least three weeks.

And now the Anfield club must decide whether to address the striker’s frustrating, continuing injury problems by cutting their losses and sending him for surgery - which would rule him out for at least a month and possibly three.

Torres flew to Valencia on Thursday to consult with the top sports injury specialist in Spain, Dr Ramon Cugat, who has advised him on recent problems he has suffered with hamstring injuries.

And after consulting scans, Cugat has confirmed the diagnosis that Torres is suffering from a condition called athletic pubalgia, which is sometimes referred to as a 'sportsman’s hernia', but is in fact not a hernia at all.

It is a painful condition where the pubic bone becomes inflamed, because of the weakening of the muscles in the lower abdominal wall, which can also cause a tear in the area where the muscle meets the bone of the pelvis.

Cugat has recommended the player must follow a conservative treatment plan which involves complete rest from training, backed by complementary work which would help strengthen the abdominal area.

If the Anfield medical staff decide he will take the break immediately, then Torres will miss Monday night’s Premier League clash against Birmingham, and then Spain’s two upcoming friendly matches against Argentina and Austria.

He would also most likely miss the two matches following the international break, which are against Manchester City on November 21, and Debreceni in the Champions League three days later, leaving him to battle to be fit for the Merseyside derby with Everton on November 29.

But there is NO guarantee the rest cure will actually work, and if it doesn’t then Torres will be forced to undergo surgery, which leaves the Liverpool medical team with a real dilemma.

Conventional surgery requires an invasive operation which would result in a three-month recuperation period, devastating the striker’s season. But hi-tech laparoscopic surgery can sometimes be used in this procedure, which seriously reduces the recovery time.

If the damage in the pubic region is not too serious, then Torres could even be back in light, aerobic training after just a fortnight, and able to perform a full contact session after just a month.

Given that he may well be out for almost a month just resting, Liverpool’s medical staff will now give serious thought to the idea that they may as well go immediately to the option of surgery, to avoid the risk of the rest cure being unsuccessful.

Torres though, does not want an operation, and was hoping to continue playing until the diagnosis from Dr Cugat, who he trusts implicitly, suggested that he must stop completely.

He was due to captain Spain in their game against Argentina next week, which will be played at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, the home of his former club Atletico Madrid, and the place he considers home, so it is a huge blow for him to miss out.

There is still an outside chance he could play against Birmingham on Monday and then take the break he requires, but Liverpool will consider that such a plan could risk further damage, and it is more likely his rehabilitation programme will begin immediately.

Experts suggest that the conservative treatment plan, avoiding surgery, is often successful, and if that does work, then it will provide the swiftest opportunity for Torres to play again. But the fear around Anfield is that they could lose their striker - under the worst case scenario - until well into the new year.

The news comes as a bitter blow, not just to the struggling Anfield club, but to Torres himself, because the forward was desperate to play through the pain barrier, to help both club and country.

He suffered the injury, originally, on international duty with Spain a month ago, and was out for a fortnight before returning to score the crucial goal to provide a massive victory over Manchester United, despite being only 80 per cent fit.

Liverpool believed that with the correct training programme they could reduce the impact of the injury and steer the player towards fitness, but the diagnosis in Spain means the only decision they now face is when treatment begins, and whether that will include surgery.

With Steven Gerrard also still unsure whether he will require surgery on the groin problem he has been carrying for the past month, it is a grim time for the Merseyside club, but at least the Anfield skipper has done some light training in the past few days, and could still be cleared to play against Birmingham.

He's clearly been told off after his very considered & reasonable article preceding the CL match & this is the most negative he could manage.

Playing an injured Gerrard and Torres is only going to compound the injuries and they will eventually break down. We're in a dire situation but they are our most important assets, give them the required recovery time needed. If (when) we go out of the CL then so be it but sooner or later something has to give. Get the lads fit and ready for the rest of the Premiership programme.

Torres’ back with squad
Liverpool Echo

FERNANDO TORRES was back at Melwood today following a whistle-stop trip to Spain for a check up on his injured groin.

The Reds striker visited a Liverpool hospital yesterday before flying out with two of his younger team-mates Zslot Poloskei and Francisco Duran, as well as club doctor Mark Waller, to a clinic in Valencia for a second opinion.

The specialist he saw is someone who both player and club trust and the meeting was designed to see what course of action is best for treatment.

Torres has been playing with pain in his groin for much of the past month and manager Rafa Benitez admitted before Wednesday’s Champions League clash in Lyon that an operation might be required to rectify the problem.

Torres will do some light training over the weekend and is still in contention to face Birmingham at Anfield on Monday night; he will only undergo surgery as a last resort.

“He wants to wait, rather than have an operation,†Benitez confirmed. “He wants to work with the physio’s to try to solve his problems, but still he has pain. He told me he needed to keep stopping during the game because of the pain.

“Whether there is the need for him or Steven (Gerrard) to have an operation is a decision we will not take straight away. We must see how they can improve, and by how much.â€

Skipper Gerrard has had an injection to try and cure his groin problem and has also done some training this week.

It has not yet been decided if he will be in the squad to play Birmingham

Fucking hell.

Yesteryear Metatarsals fucked us up.

Now, it's groins.

I blame the motivational skills of the management team!!

TORRES AND GERRARD INJURY LATEST

Paul Hassall at Melwood 07 November 2009
Rafael Benitez today revealed that he will give Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard late fitness tests before deciding whether the duo can face Birmingham City on Monday.
The Reds boss has had to cope with a growing injury list in recent weeks but is hopeful he will be able to recall some key personnel when his side face Alex McLeish's men.

"We are improving. We have some players doing light training again. At least they are training and hopefully today they will be a bit better," he told his pre-match press conference.

"We will see if they can be available. There is a big difference between players being fit and whether they can be available.

"It is something we have to analyse. For example, yesterday Gerrard was training with the physios on his day off. He is improving. We don't know if he will be fit. We don't know if he will be available. We will have to analyse the situation. He was injured before and has now been 15 days without training with the team.

"Can he play or can he be on the bench? At this moment we do not know."

Asked about the fitness of Torres, the boss said: "He has gone to Spain to see a specialist. We have also been in contact with our medical staff. We know that he is a little bit better than he was before.

"He still has some problems and will be working with the physios. We don't know if he can face Birmingham. He can train, but we will have to manage the situation. After all this we will make a decision."

The injuries to both Gerrard and Torres have raised questions as to whether they will need surgery to cure their respective problems, but Benitez believes they must analyse each case carefully before making a decision.

"They have had experience of these types of problems for years, so it is a question of trying to keep going and to see how they react," he said.

"Each player is different. Some players will work with the physio and be fit throughout the whole season. Others may need to stop and then carry on again.

"Torres is playing with pain, but he is someone who has a positive and good mentality. He wants to play for the team and I think we can carry on.

"I was really surprised with the criticism after some games. You can see he's not 100 per cent. So when can we decide if he can carry on or not? Again, it depends on the reaction of player.

"At this moment he is playing and trying to do his best. Sometimes you can see he is not fully fit, but he is improving. He was much better after the game against Fulham than he was against United. It was the same after Lyon, so he is improving.

"Stevie is totally different. He is clearly not fit and will need time. Fernando is not fully fit. There is a big difference."

I wonder if Gerrard's tried acupuncture, seeing as he says his groin isn't actually injured as such but he still feels pain. It does seem to work in some instances. Wenger includes it as an option since his time in Japan.
