Fernando Torres believes that Liverpool's decision to part company with Rafael Benitez was 'best for everyone'.

Speaking ahead of Spain's World Cup clash with Portugal tonight, the striker broke his silence on the departure of the man who brought him to Anfield and insists that a fresh start was needed after Liverpool failed to build on their second-place finish in the Premier League.

Last year saw the club struggle to a seventh place standing in the table after crashing out of the group stages of the Champions League and reaching the semi-final of the Europa League and Torres, who was signed by Benitez in 2007, feels that the time was right to say goodbye.

He said: “At this time I believe it was best for everyone.

“He won everything and last year they demanded too much from him.â€

Questions over the 26-year-old's future continue to linger ahead of Roy Hodgson's imminent appointment later this week but Torres is refusing to be distracted as Vicente del Bosque's side aim to build on their Euro 2008 triumph by going all the way in South Africa.

“They will tell us the situation after the World Cup,†he added.

“All I am focused on is beating Portugal.

“We won the Euros but we can’t live in the past. This is our golden age and we need to seize the moment.

"If Spain don’t win the World Cup it will have been a lost opportunity and who knows if we will get another chance."
