Torres and 'the club'

We heard Hodgson's rather disconcerting mention that Torres has no problem with him, but has 'a beef' with the club. I heard some journo saying last night on radio 5 live that Liverpool would receive a bid for Torres from City within the next week (50 m), and the bid is being made because we have informed them that we'd be prepared to sell. The decision to go or stay will be down to Torres and City will require a quick take it or leave it decision from him (as 'the club' will apparently be happy with their offer, having solicited it) If this is true 'the club' have surely decided to cash in on Fernando. This in rather clear contrast to Hodgson's assurance that Torres was not for sale. This mightn't be true, but the chap discussing this last night was very matter of fact. Anyone else hear it?

Posted this is in the transfer thread. I don't think it's true tbh Doc.

I hate David Villa actually, Spanish players seem very interested in talking about their teammates and what they should do. It's from the Daily Star, so could be bs. But how the hell would Villa know what Chelsea alledegely bid for Nando?

Spanish World Cup hitman David Villa has expressed his surprise that Fernando Torres appears to be staying at Liverpool.

However, he insisted that Torres would leave the Reds next season if they fail to win silverware or reach the Champions League.

“I am actually a little surprised. It looks like Nando is staying. After I spoke with him at the World Cup I thought he would sign for Chelsea," he was quoted as saying by the Star." I think it must only be that Chelsea did not meet Liverpool’s valuation. Because, if they had, I am sure he would have made the move.â€

“The only reason Nando ever left his beloved Atletico was because he knew he had to be at a club where he could win the highest honours – but that has not happened at Liverpool.

“I loved Valencia but I knew I had to leave if I wanted to win the biggest prizes in football.

“This is Liverpool’s last chance to keep him. They have to prove they are capable of challenging on all fronts this season, otherwise he will be gone.â€

“Torres is happy at Liverpool in every sense apart from the football. He loves the city, the fans and the players but he is the best striker in the world. He will go if he has to.

“He would not sign for Manchester City because, for him, the money is not the most important thing.

“But if Liverpool fail to win anything I am sure he will be at Chelsea next summer.â€

“He was promised things at Liverpool that just haven’t happened,†he continued. “They said they would build a squad that would challenge Manchester United for the title – and it just hasn’t happened.

"They sold Xabi Alonso last year and are going to sell Javier Mascherano this summer.

“I can totally understand Nando’s frustration.

“The best all-round striker in the world isn’t playing in the European Cup during his peak years and that’s just not right.

“If the new coach and players win something then I am sure he will sta.

“If not, I am sure he will go and nobody could blame him.â€

Your story said Torres feels let down by 'the club'. This story doesn't contradict it, in that 'the club' are now encouraging City to make a bid not that Torres wants to go there. In fact this stipulation that Torres needs to make a quick decision ties in with the fact that they know he isn't keen on going there

If it is true this report would suggest he'll turn it down. But then again, if the club try and sell him, he might say fuck it and go.

The same story about Torres to City, claim Utd also could be a possible destination. And that we know will never happen.

I don't think Hodgson would have talked about the Torres situation at the PC if this was the actual stand regarding a transfer from the club. We, Hodgson, Broughton et all would like right twats if this happens now after everything that has been said abut him staying.

Sounds like lazy sunday journalism to me mate.

It said on the BBC gossip page that City want to offload Adebayor, which would leave them in need of a #9.

Still, why would we want to sell him and for 50M at that? It doesn't ring true.

If Torres goes, we will not finish top four i think....

I don't think its that easy to replace Mascherano and Torres in one transfer window. Regardless of how much money we have.

We are also yet to replace Alonso from last season. So that is effectively 3 world class players lost from the side that challenged for title. When you factor and Gerrard and Carra's natural decline in ability due to age, i think we will struggle to finish top four.

I don't see how they can create more holes, before plugging the existing ones. Whoever is behind this decision will get the sack, because i don't see this ending well.

*I meant to write - "hope it's not true"

50mm + Ademonster - i may be tempted.

*I know i'm contradicting myself.

Aren't City spending shit loads on the Italian guy?

Anyway, as said Hodgson has put his neck out a bit (though he was quite vague about it) so he'll look pretty stupid if the club now decide to cash in.

That said, I think it is down to Torres at the end of the day, and the press are aware he returns tomorrow so speculation and pressure from the media (who clearly fucking hate us) was bound to intensify.

Radio 5 Live tends to be dominated by London-based football journalists, many of whom seem to support Chelsea. What they say about Liverpool is usually a bit twisted.

I still recall with pleasure the guy who said in 2005 that Liverpool were only in the last 16 of the Champions League to "make up the numbers."

Sounds like a compete crock of to be honest.
I heard elsewhere that fernando's beef with the club was over image rights.
That was probably mere speculation too.

They do hate us, no doubt, and I could see this as a typically negative London journo slant.

We'll see what happens. I think a City bid is coming come what may, let's hope 'the club' are unequivocal and tell them to fuck off.

I honestly can't see him going to another English club. He'll leave one day, but either to go to Serie A or to return home.

[Crosses fingers]

But in their favour, Alan Green is a genuine Liverpool supporter. He was sitting near Vlad's Quiff at an evening game a couple of seasons ago. Not only was he cheering Liverpool, but at half-time, when the announcement came that Man U were losing, he stood up and cheered that too! :-D

He loves us, but he is also very critical of our footy when it is bad which gets on some people's tits. I love him though.

And also isn't it a tad convenient that now that it has been more or les confirmed that Fernando wants to stay another season, it is the club who wants to make the transfer happen.

I wouldn't say that I am not worried but logic tells me that I shouldn't be.

I actually prefer that sometimes, tbh.

I doubt he's as hard on us as Steve Macca tho; the bald one was absolutely brutal when he was on ESPN in Malaysia.

If Torres is going to return to Anfield and sulk like he did last year, then he needs to come out and tell the club his intentions.

Adebayor plus £50M is tempting and he is a super striker!

May as well lash this in here.

The People report Citeh are in for torres, yawn, yawn...Mindless journo's making shit up. There's a reason it's in a Sunday rag.

Manchester City will make a stunning 50 million pounds move for Liverpool's Fernando Torres but want an answer from him fast.

And if they cannot persuade the Spanish superstar to join Roberto Mancini's Eastlands revolution they will try to snare Diego Forlan with a 20 million pounds swoop. Megabucks City know they face an uphill task trying to take Torres to a club that is not playing Champions League football next season.

So they will move on quickly if their bid for Torres fails, confident they can do a deal with Atletico Madrid for Forlan at around 20 million pounds.

City want two new front men, with Inter Milan's Mario Balotelli the other target, to give them a formidable strikeforce and the chance of a title chase.

Torres is their No.1 choice and they know Liverpool will take their money.

But although the Anfield star is looking to move despite boss Roy Hodgson's claims he will have to be convinced to join City.

Chelsea are waiting to make an offer for Torres but want to avoid an auction.

Both clubs are also wary Manchester United could also come in and beat them to the Spaniard.

Because of those fears City have sounded out the Forlan camp and the ex-United hero is willing to come back to England.

While Tottenham could not afford his wages, personal terms are no problem to City.

Liverpool also see Forlan as a potential replacement for Torres.

Citys move covers them against the possibility of losing Carlos Tevez who is a 40 million pounds target for Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid.

I mean seriously, who the fuck employs these people? I might as well apply; previous experience needed - lying through your teeth.

£60M is the bare minimum we should accept, and I hope we do not.

I'm fine with him going next year, but I think he owes us one good year, and I don't think we could replace his quality in one summer with everything else needing doing.

Selling him now would be a fucking disaster.

I don't think he's right about Torres going to Chelsea and I certainly don't think he was right to flap his gums about any of it in the media.

Maybe we could get Paul the psychic Octopus to predict what team Torres will play for next season...

Villa pretty much told the world what we already knew...

the last few years have been fucking bullshit.

Alonso and Mascher leaving... Rafa having nightmares with the owners and then leaving...

At the moment we are a joke and look no where near a team being able to challenge for the title..

My concern is our players fitness.. Gerrard, Agger, Johnson, Torres, Aurellio, Cole and Aquilani have all had horrible injury problems over the last few years.. If they can stay fit for the full season we may comfortably finish in the top 5 - However its unlikely and if the worst was to happen and they all spent a lot of time on the injury list we would be COMPLETELY FUCKED.

It will be quite difficult to keep a good run going with so many players in and out of the squad on a regular basis...

i hope my concerns dont come into fruition..

but on that note- id cash in on Torres for 60 million and sign 4/5 quality consistant performers that are rarely injured.. We can have the best 11 in the world but if they are never fit - whats the point.
