Albert Riera and Fernando Torres fired as Spain warmed up for the Confederations Cup with a 6-0 thrashing of Azerbaijan.

Riera bagged his third international goal on 67 minutes following a first-half hat-trick from David Villa.

Torres then hit his 19th Spain strike in the dying moments.

The pair played all 90 minutes alongside clubmates Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso, while Pepe Reina replaced Iker Casillas for the second period.

Spain now travel to South Africa where they will kick off against New Zealand on June 14. Also in Group A are Iraq and the hosts.

What is the Confederations Cup? Is it just a warm-up for the World Cup, or does it actually have some caché in certain countries?

He's hardly played because he's shown this season he's susceptible to niggling injuries, so...

Besides.... Alonso, Reina and particularly Arbeloa, have had long seasons.

Does Riera have to do as much tracking back and defending for Spain as he does for us?

I know it's Azerbaijan or whomever, but still - does he get more freedom to attack for them Spaniels?
 
He hasn't played a lot this season, but he should be resting as opposed to exposing himself to a recurrence, a new injury or a serious breakdown of a previously minor injury.

I've always said arbeloa is shit bar the odd game so no change there.

More worrying is I'm starting to think carra is finished. Hopefully he's just tired. And yes, he was out of order with alvaro.

I corrected your deliberate mistake there Spider!

BTW, I think Arbeloa is a perfectly acceptable option at right back, and considering that he played a lot of games, it is somewhat understandable that he expierenced a dip in form (a la Carra) towards the end of the season.

I don't particularly want to have a pop at Carra, but you could see Arbeloa's point in having a go back. No one jumped on Carra's case when he completely miskicked the ball and let the opposition through on goal in the previous game.
