Oh jeez ... RT @danroan: New Lpool Chmn Tom Werner wants club to play PL matches abroad - 39th Game back on the agenda

well no surprises there.

if these new owners turn out to be douches there will be no easy way to shift them with 3 of them on the board including the chairman.

The 39th game is cringe-worthy.

By all means have some pre-season Prem tournament abroad, but don't start pissing on the traditions of a successful league.

I think we should organize more pre season tournaments at Anfield, its great for the kids who can't get a normal match ticket.

Who are you supposed to play in the 39th game?

It was suggested it be a random draw.

"Pre-season matches are great but why not have an actual match in season," Werner told BBC Sport.

Playing a competitive match abroad could help clubs cash in on television markets in overseas territories where the Premier League is popular, like Asia and the United States.

"I think first of all the Premier League is the strongest league in the world and its reach is global," added Werner.

"It's been very impressive to me, the number of people globally who watch and we hope to expand that imprint.

"I think the more important the game the more excitement."

From a football view point it makes zero sense.

From a financial view point...well, its obvious.

Even casual suggestion of this should result in some sort of banning from being in anyway associated with a club.

I'm all for football clubs becoming viable businesses for these lot but not at the expense of the beautiful game

The traditionalists need to chill. It's an international game, it'd be phenomenal for our marketing over here for example in the U.S....

You wouldn't want many games overseas, but I love it. But remember Werner is only one guy.

It is international game, yeah. That's why they have leagues in different countries. The English league belongs in England.

MLB starts off the season in a foreign country usually. NFL had a game in London last weekend.

If the same people moaning about us not making enough revenues from overseas are the same ones who are opposed to having a game overseas, and don't see a problem with those two positions then I will struggle to be polite in responding.

It's really not a big deal. one game out of 38. Exactly Rosco - you want more money for better players? then shush!

Personally I'd rather it stayed as it is, but money may dictate it as it does with everything football related these days.

I don't give a shit about "international revenues" and what not as I'm not Liverpool's accountant.

Yeah, I'm not moaning about increasing overseas revenues either.

There is enough money out there without having to resort to this.

Great, can ya show us where to get it? Need a few players to buy as our only good player is nearly 31!

Oh shit. Wow, you went and got me good with that one.

Every top club in the top European leagues is fucked for cash and forget everything else, the *only* resolution left is to whore the game out to other countries. I dread to think what might happen if this doesn't go ahead.

Saint, IMO that's pretty short-sighted. To achieve what we want to achieve in the game will take shedloads of cash. If we'd earned more of it these past 20 years - and we most certainly should have done - we'd be a much better situation now, for a variety of reasons.

Sorry to hear that, and FWIW I'd also prefer things the way they were, but pretty much all sports have gone this route now.

I don't really understand the strong reaction that everyone has to this.

This ship sailed long ago. You had most liverpool supporters praying for some sugar daddy owner, to bring in more foreign players, all using international TV money, speaking about capitalizing better on our brand in asia.

It'll probably happen one way or the other eventually, and I don't have a problem with it categorically, but it couldn't possibly happen as an additional game for everyone. I'm just not sure how it works to have, say Bolton play Wolves in Minneapolis.
