Is it a myth that you should have a right and left footed CB? It didn't effect some of the best defensive partnership we've had in the last decade in the league. i.e Terry & Carvalho, Ferdinand & Vidic, Carragher & Hyppia.

I can see the advantages of having a right AND left footed CB in your defensive pairings but does it really matter?

This subject has me stumped as well, until we were linked to Sakho, I didn't even know you had defenders who could only play one side of the central defence. Personally I think it's all bobbins.

Its interesting as say your LCB is left footed, and your RCB is right footed, then they are weakest straight down the centre!

I'm confident the majority of posters select their preferred team sheets on here with an emphasis on having the RCB and LCB operating on their stronger foot. i.e Skrtel and then one from Agger/Sakho. The idea of this has been drilled into our subconscious. I am guilty of this way of thinking too but I'm wondering does it matter?

Some defenders are obviously accustomed to playing at RCB / LCB and changing this can be disruptive to their game but should they be interchangeable?

Watch a CB tackling on his 'weaker' foot in the penalty area and then say it doesn't matter !

Im a great believer in the Alan Hansen, Rio Ferdinand school of defending in that if you have to make last ditch tackles in the penalty area you arent a great defender.

That said anyone see that tackle Mascherano put in last night on Robben in injury time.
Game changer.

Will await the bore-a-tron to come into the thread, and give us all a lecture on how it's done. Or call everyone a cunt for giving their opinion on it.
If the cb's are good enough, I don't see how it matters. If you've got 2 luiz's at the back though......

Ha. Yeah but you have to ask yourself, would be more beneficial to have a left footed Luiz AND a right footed Luiz back there?

Watch Skrtel play on the left for Liverpool. Awful. Then watch how much better he is when on the right. Watch how tentative Carragher was on the left, then assured on the right. The only one who could effortlessly play on both was Sami Hyypiä, but that was because he had far superior ball control and positional sense than all of the above.

This (although interestingly I reckon Carra made a better LB than he ever did a RB, but that's another discussion). Maybe it shouldn't make a difference to top level players, but there's no question that it does in some cases.

There was an interview the Guardian (I think) did with Michael Robinson a few years back when he contrasted Lawrensen with Hansen, and he said Lawro was always on his arse, but Hansen never needed to be.

Here it is - from 2004:

Hansen or Lawrensen? As footballers, that is.
Mark used to fly into slide tackles, everyone would applaud and he'd be a hero. But Hansen would have seen it long before. Lawrensen was never on his feet; Hansen never needed to be on his bum. Lawrensen was brilliant but Hansen was a genius.
Rush or Raúl?
Rush. One of the greatest. He made me look good. I'd jump up, head it anywhere and Rushie would make it the perfect flick-on. [Robinson springs to his feet grinning and demonstrates]. Rush never knew which bloody knife or fork to use but on the pitch he was a genius. Raúl is perhaps a bit over-rated compared to the other galacticos. He's más talante que talento [Small Talk's helpful translation: more personality than ability]. He is a predator, an animal, a dark mysterious man who'll score two when Madrid are losing against Kiev, two degrees below freezing. He's got character and used to carry Madrid on his own before those other great players turned up. He doesn't have one particularly outstanding skill - his left foot's only a seven out of 10, his right's a four, he's not great in the air or quick. I admire him, but I wouldn't cross the road on a rainy night and buy tickets to see him.
Rush over Raúl, then. But what about Owen?
Michael Owen is one of the reasons Liverpool are crap, because the aim is just to get him one on one. Owen has only got one medium - come short and go long. I'd have loved to have been as good as him - the trouble is, Houllier has built a whole team around him and every other team in England knows about it. Houllier is so stereotyped in his thoughts. It's not fair on Michael, it's not fair on the team and it's not fair on the victims like me who watch it. At Real Madrid, Owen would be a substitute.
