So in the match thread someone mentioned buying a striker in Jan would be key to our season and that got me thinking... pride aside, how much is it going to matter?

What is the best we can hope for this season?

It would seem to me that we're gonna end up in midtable come May and the best we can really hope for is securing Europa League football again.

The best we can hope for? Staying in The Premiership.

This season has been a write off before the season even started.

Rodgers can put his stamp on the side and we'll see where we're at

If we get someone like Huntelaar - we can still challenge in Europe, the FA Cup and perhaps put a scare into Spurs/Arsenal or whoever is holding onto 4th by then. A win at Newcastle will confirm my stupid optimistic point of view.

I think this season should be about assembling a squad capable of challenging for a spot in Europe next season with it incrementally improving season on season thereafter.
It would be nice to qualify for the Europa league, but relegation aside I am not too bothered where we finish in the league this season.
My expectations start increasing somewhat next season
Another piece of silverware would be a nice bonus.

Yup

If they don't invest (and invest heavily) on quality in January the small number of quality players we have will be looking to fuck off. And I wouldn't blame them.

Yup

Still think it's shambolic how they backed Kenny to the tune of 100m, yet are fucking over Rodgers

It sucks to say it but if there isn't much money to spend (again) next summer, we'd probably be better off selling Suarez if we can get a premium and reinvesting it in a couple other players Porto style.

Forget which Journo it was he argued FSG had the finances to make one big splash! Unfortunately we pissed that away. Once Jan comes around we'll have a better idea of their intentions regarding supporting BR.

I'd be up for this, but obviously it's making sure we use the money wisely. Which we wouldn't. So we should keep Luis.

Do you trust the manager to spend the money on the right players? None of his signings so far have scored goals, and Borini seems to be the only one that might.

We've only just started rebuilding though. The squad was overaged, overpaid and with little quality despite spending 100 mill. Playing Cole and Downing today just shows that.

We need more than a striker, but its a fucking good start.

The season isnt a write off, but Rodgers will put his stamp on the team and assemble a squad that can qualify for Europe. He's playing youngsters, players out of position and cunts that arent good enough.

If, if there is anyone we should be pointing the finger at its those who blew large sums of money and made us a worse team. We cant put it right in one transfer window.

Cheer up lads, only league cup played with our reserves which we all know are mostly not good enough.

We have paper thin squad in terms of quality, cannot rest our main players for games we want to win.

I see the logic but letting go of our best player would mean we would need 3 very very good players to fill the gap and make some small steps forward. Wouldn't trust us to do that.

The Yanks have shown themselves to be fekin incompetent, so I say this based on nothing more than hope, but surely they realize that without serious investment = no CL which = vastly reduced $$$$ which = mediocrity.

This season was going to happen. You can't manage, perform, operate, buy and sell like we have for the last 3 or 4 years and not expect it all to come to and bite you on the hole at some stage. Well, here it is.

I read a few people in other threads saying "we're allowed to question BR now...". It's some of the most mindnumbingly short-sighted shite I've read.

It's like criticising Obama for not having a great economy at his disposal. Look at what he walked into. A culture of buying truly shite players, of overpaying the ones we've got, of shoddy, mismanagment, and a club which is getting year-by-year progressively worse than it's closest competitors. We're not a top 4 club anymore, we're competing with the Newcastle's, Everton's, and Spurs's of the league these days. That's our level.

You don't plod along embarassingly like we have for 4 years and automatically expect it's just a blip and we'll be back up there the second "we buy a goalscorer".

We have had two disasterous manager in a row.
We've wasted hundreds of millions on fucking awful players.
We've recouped fuck all in return.
We have a dilapidated stadium.
We're doling out bloated contracts to shite players.
We have a Comms director dealing with internet trolls, and coming out of it worse.
We have owners unwilling to back a new manager cos they're still reeling from the previous one.
We've finished progressively lower in the league for 4 straight years.
And we're in the bottom half of the table.

If you think all this adds up to "now questioning BR" or "just being shiort of a goalscorer" you are a million miles off.

Open your eyes people.

I am with this . Huntelaar and Suarez together would make a difference . Klass Jan is not the quickest and will not run around the front three but he is used to 4 3 3 and he is used to Suarez . Huntelaar would add goals .

Oh and if we'd have bought Sturridge I reckon we'd be doing quite a bit better.

I like the way BR thinks turning both shit 20m quid mids into full backs is the answer though. It's entertaining at least.

Ryan is right. But the stadium isn't dilapidated. It's small by modern standards but it's lovely.

Yeah fair enough. I meant to say more about us spending fuckloads on a new stadium and still being no better off, but my big massive rant waylaid me.

Fair enough but surely Rodgers shouldn't be immune from criticism just because of the shite that went before him ? What if he's just adding to the pile ? I mean let's be honest , what has he done in football to really suggest he's the man to drag us out of this massive clusterfuck hole ? . Again we're all just buying into the theory and so called potential of the plan . Fuck most of us here can bang on about playing football the right way ,giving youth a chance, 3 names in an envelope . There needs to be some progress and signs that it's working , surely a club our size can't just write off a whole season no matter what went before .

Look i'm obviously not saying sack him or that now is even the time to start fully questioning him but this notion that he can't be criticised or that there are zero expectations this season is pissing me off . Yes he's had his hands tied in some respects but he's been hired to fix things so again surely come May there has to be signs of this .

The more and more I watch us play this season - the more I am thinking actually there is f*ck all improvement in what we do. We are just as inconsistent as we were last season - if not then I am pretty sure we are showing signs of being utter shite now. I am already tired of Rodgers ideas - they are nothing special, if after we scored a goal and went ahead and then managed to contain the opposition then I might think 'oh yes we are are a strong team now' but seriously at least Kenny's tactics made the defence look like it was world class while creating chances. With this system we have now - we create those same chances that Kenny created and we still can't score when we should do, but at the same time Rodgers makes our defensive work look like utter rubbish.

We really are a mid-table team, there is no improvement since last season in real terms. All I see now are a load of players who get tired playing that system and a ball that gets passed around side to side to many times. NOTHING has changed. So I ask this question to ALL of you (before you start your usual insults at me) :-

Do any of you expect us to win any game before a match anymore ?

because I don't - two wins in the PL so far - what the f*ck is that ? - it's just utter shite, and we could not even defend a 2-0 lead at Everton. This must be what a West Ham supporter feels like every week. I had my doubts about this guy like many of you but what I could not understand about his so called great Swansea team and last season - was that their results were not that great under him. What a load of shit !!!

I think Rodgers has done a hell of a lot more good than bad since his arrival. His willingness to gamble on the youngsters, while it hasn't solved our problems with lack of results, it's certainly encouraging to how well they seem to be fitting in.

The man's fucking human. Of course he's going to make mistakes. I didn't see the game tonight, but common sense tells me that starting Joe Cole was always going to be a disaster. But Rodgers most definitely isn't the problem at LFC. The problem is that the club just isn't what it used to be any more.

Your loyalty is missplaced - that team of ours is not good enough to be an attack minded team, Rafa could probably get better results out of it, and I think we adopted a more cautious approach to our play. Clearly attacking and scoring goals is not something we are good at. Of course the players will love all this shit because its another excuse for them not be disciplined in thier defensive duties. Too many times now - using Rodgers methods, we have been found wanting as soon as we lose the ball, they all look like a man who has had his trowsers pulled down each time it happens.

It's vital we improve our league standing as the season progresses to attract targets next summer so yes a striker in Janurary is needed.

Ryan's post is spot on and the same was said by some in the summer. Before the season started, the club (the Board and the Management) went to great lengths to attempt to manage the fans expectations down to, basically, we are going to be shit for a few years, like it or lump it. That's what a period of transition is and we're in a major one; A MAJOR ONE.
Unfortunately, whenever we win a game, some people expect us to kick on and win the League.
We're mid-table on the back of one of the best strikers in the World at the top of his game. Where the fuck would we be if he wasn't here? Where the fuck will we be if he get's injured? And what does all this say about the majority of our other players?
You work it out.
Criticising Rodgers is ridiculous. From the owners down to the players, I wouldn't be sweating over retaining that many of them but he'd certainly be one.
