Eintracht Frankfurt plot swoop for Andriy Voronin
Nov 13 2009 By James Pearce

EINTRACHT Frankfurt are plotting a swoop for Liverpool striker Andriy Voronin during the January transfer window.

The mid-table Bundesliga outfit have yet to make an official approach but are keen on securing the services of the Ukrainian international.

Voronin has struggled to adapt to the demands of the Premier League since he arrived at Anfield on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in 2007.

However, the 30-year-old is highly rated in Germany and scored 11 goals during a successful loan spell at Hertha Berlin last season.

Hertha wanted to make the move permanent this summer but a proposed £3million deal with Liverpool fell through.

Boss Rafa Benitez’s attacking options are severely limited, but if Eintracht match that fee and the Spaniard is guaranteed he will be able to reinvest the funds he may decide to do business.

Voronin has yet to find the net in three starts and nine substitute appearances for the Reds so far this season and young Frenchman David Ngog has leapt above him in the pecking order to be Fernando Torres’ understudy.

The Ukrainian, who is under contract until 2011, may also have to move on in search of regular football in order to fulfil his dream of playing in next summer’s World Cup after he was left out of the squad for their play-off with Greece tomorrow.

Meanwhile, left-back Fabio Aurelio’s hopes of earning a first cap for Brazil have been dashed after a calf injury ruled him out of tomorrow’s friendly with England in Doha.

Aurelio joins the Reds’ long list of walking wounded with a number of stars battling to recover in time to face Manchester City next Saturday.

Benitez hopes Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger, who both pulled out of this weekend’s internationals, will be fit to take on Mark Hughes’ side, but Yossi Benayoun and Albert Riera are facing a month on the sidelines.

"Daniel Agger felt something in his back after the Birmingham game and didn’t go with Denmark after we spoke with their doctor and manager but I think he could be back training again in a few days," Benitez said.

"Glen Johnson’s was a strange situation because he finished the game on Monday and then travelled to London to be with England.

"He felt something in his hamstring and came back to us for a scan. Hopefully it’s not too serious and he could be available again in a week.

"Both Yossi Benayoun and Albert Riera have muscle problems and will be out for three to four weeks. It depends on each player, but for Riera this is the second time with this injury. "We will have to wait and see how they progress."

"We are disappointed because there are too many things at the moment that we can’t change. Both players are wingers as well and for them to be out at the same time is bad news for us."

Fernando Torres has started a rehabilitation and treatment programme in a bid to avoid the need to have surgery on his groin injury.

"With Fernando Torres we are talking about two or three weeks of treatment and working with the physios," Benitez said.

"Hopefully he can be running in a few days and we will see how he progresses.

"Sometimes a break comes at a bad time because you don’t like to see your players flying all over the world, but this time it gives us a chance to get some players back."

* Liverpool Reserves’ trip to Wigan has been put back 24 hours and will now be played on Wednesday, November 25 (7.30pm).

The home game with Blackburn, due to be played on December 2, will now be played on Monday, February 8 (7pm).

Fingers crossed (for the player's own sake as well as ours, not that he's my priority), but let's also hope we have money for a January replacement. I'm sure he'd have been gone a while ago but for the fact that we'd then have been down to just three strikers.

That's the reason why I don't think this is going to happen. We won't get any replacement in January. Rafa won't sell. Unfortunately.

I honestly think Rafa will take the first opportunity he gets.

N'gog's better and ahead of him in the pecking order, and there's always Kuyt with Yossi on the right.

Getting rid of 'deadwood' can be, as we've found, extremely difficult. If the chance comes along, we should take it.

They should just get on the coach, drive off, blindfold him, head for somewhere far far away and then let him out and drive back. I'm so sick of the sight of the Barney Rubble wannabe I just want him gone.

Not since Diouf has there been a player I've been less excited with wearing our colors.

Wiedersehn.

we don't need to replace him - its not like he serves a purpose now. just sell him and get him off the payroll. nemeth could do more and n'gog already does

Usually when you pay nothing, you don't get much more than that in return. (apart from a few exceptions like Gary Mc)

I was one of the few Voronin fans, but I was wrong.

Unless Rafa is bringing new players in, I can't see him letting Voronin go in January.

Voronin has to go. He needs games to play well and he will never get that at liverpool. Same with Dossena.

If we manage to ship them both out in the winter transfer window, we would have done very well for ourselves. They don't even need replacing, thats the truth.

Largely agree, but IMO the last bit depends on whether any of the ressies/youngsters are ready to step up. We certainly need a fourth striker.

Voronin adds nothing to our squad. N'gog does a better job and Nemeth could just as easily fill his shoes. There's also Pacheco to consider who looks on the verge even though he is not an out and out striker. While we are short on experience as backup for Torres, I would much rather sell Voronin for a nominal fee and replace him with one of our Ressies.
