Lets hope the owners don't use last years rules of including contract extensions in the transfer budget. Pepe deserves this in all honesty. We would probably be in worse position if it weren't for him.

PEPE REINA is close to signing a new five-year deal at Anfield.

Liverpool opened talks with the keeper earlier this month and have put a £23million package on the table.

The deal would put Reina on around £90,000 a week. The club expect an agreement to be reached shortly with the player having already committed his future to the Merseysiders.

Reina's current deal runs until 2012, so his new terms will represent a three-year extension.

His salary hike will reflect his rise to what his manager and team-mates describe as 'world number one' status.

Reina had been coveted by both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in recent years, but despite some homesickness issues earlier in his Anfield career he's now well settled on Merseyside.

A club spokesman told Sport of the World: "Pepe's deal will reflect his position as an outstanding Liverpool player. A five-year contract will reflect how highly he is thought of by everyone at the club. We know he wants to stay and we want to keep him, so now talks have begun on schedule we don't expect any problems."

Although the American owners continue to court criticism for their running of the club, there can be no questioning their financial commitment to retaining the current squad.

Reina will join Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger and Yossi Benayoun in signing lucrative deals over the last six months.

Liverpool point out the combined cost of those deals is well in excess of £100m over the course of their contracts. That's aside from the manager's own contract worth £25m.

you make it sound that this is a bad move ... tying up one of the best GKs in the world to a long term contract? Fantastic.

Its fantastic that we have secured him for a further 3 years, what I'm pessimistic about is that the owners think they have now spent 23 million out the transfer budget for the summer going on last summers reasoning.

Without Pepe, it doesn't matter who we sign. I'd sooner sell Gerrard than Pepe.

People should be assigned forums, and stick to them.

The football one is clearly not for you DSE.

I was being provocative. I clearly don't want to see Gerrard gone over any other player in our squad (and probably in the league).

I thought hyperbolics were what we traded in on this forum. Maybe I'm not cut out for FF. See you in the Style subforum... er, I mean, StyleForum.

I am happy we resigned Pepe though.

(Yes, Ryan, that joke is tired, I know.)

I'm very happy if it's true. I would like to have sex with Pepe Reina if he was a woman. I am also very pissed and early enough at home that I turned on the computer to write stupid shit on the internets.

X 1 trillion.

We shouldn't sign him on a long contract in case he gets injured.

It was a dig at Rosco and his lunacy during this thread

So well done on missing the point and, in doing so, tempting fate.

The one tempting fate is you, mate.

Themn's reply should have been obvious; there's a reason for Ross' lunacy.
