At one time some of us here wanted him to come so badly that we were gutted when the Gunners landed him as one of England's most promising forward/winger.

Since he was amazingly picked by Sven ahead of some established players, he has hardly featured anywhere, even in the Gunner's squad, mostly due to injuries.

Are we lucky not to have paid the millions for him now?

When he is healthy he has shown flashes however his injuries are more than worrying.

To answer your original question, yes I am glad we didn't pay bucko bucks for him.

But remember this?

yes, that was a fantastic run. since then, I cannot remember many. sigh, the gunners are our jinx. arshavin at anfield was another. dammit.

I'd still have bought him, over Babel anyway, he's still got loads of potential. He's had injuries too which have hampered his progress, but it was only about six months ago he was turning it on and looking the part in an England shirt, at least occasionally.

Hardly a write off just yet.

Yes, he is indeed better than Babel or has the potential. Both are still young, and both are quite speedy too.

Gunners paid huge sum for him as a teenager, huge gamble I would think then.

Great run, but what does that take? What did he do? What did he do? This is a nothing subject.
The answer is we are better off without him.

I think he is going to be an excellent player - and he should definitely be in the England squad for the WC in preference to some of the tortoises we may pick.

He's scored a hat-trick for England away from home in a big game, not too many players do that, especially at his age. Injuries have curtailed him, but he'll be back

He's quality.

Not trying to undermine you, but i honestly dont see that as proof that he's quality.
Defoe scored 5 last week, he's still Defoe. (Granted he's alright)
As a point of interest, who in today's game would you liken Walcott to?

Defoe scored 5 against Titus Bramble and Chris Kirkland.

Walcott did it on a bog of a pitch against a quality International side that had beaten them (at home) in their previous game.

He reminds me of Owen so much.

Owen? Really? Ive never entertained that but not a bad comparison to be honest. i dont think he'll make it. Nothing to do with player type but i see him as a Jeffers(not cos hes at the arse) as in he has alot of promise but wont fulfill it

I loved watching him waiting to tip off after Gerrards penalty. His big wonky head shaking in disbelief.

While I appreciate he hasn't exactly set the world on fire (partly due to injuries), that statement is patently false. He would instantly improve our team and cost about the same as Babel. I know who I'd rather have.

If he had gone here or elsewhere and performed as he's done at the Gooners, I bet some would be saying 'Wenger would have got more out of him by now! He knows how to bring on young players!' It shows that sometimes a player just isn't that easy to coach, or he is but he still struggles to realise his potential.

I wouldn't go that far yet, but I do think he has to resign himself to the fact that he's not going to be a striker, get his head down and make a success of being a wide man. If he sets himself properly to that task, he may yet get there IMO.

I think the articles at the time stated that the fee was 12M with 5M being paid up front and the rest performance related.

Given that he's spent a lot of time injured and Arsenal have won nothing, they've probably not gotten near that 12M figure yet.

By a country mile...

I'm beginning to fucking hate Babel.

I would be curious to find out how Babel would have turned out under Wenger. Not that I think he would be a star now necessarily, but just curious likes.

I think you probably know the answer to that one.

We all do. Wenger watched him for ages before we went in for him. It's always worried me that he decided against signing Babel in the end.
