Who the fuck voted for Glen Johnson ? Thats just mental
2 mentalists, then.

Sorry Terrier, my opinion is Neal was over-rated, a good player, but was lucky to be in the team he was, and to have good players in front of him, Jimmy Case being the main one.
I see he is in the lead, how many that voted saw him play regularly?
He comes quite a long way down that list. Rob Jones could have been the greatest right back we had seen.
The only one who I wouldn't have seen make their home debut was Chris Lawler, and what a fantastic player he was too.

regards

Hmmm I dunno about that Vladders. It's true Neal was in a superb team but he also weighed in with his fair share of defensive duties and important goals! Remember the European Finals? He was solid, dependable and rarely
injured.

Regarding Jones, this is always a debatable one because, like Babbel, we never got to see his real qualities over a duration.

Neal's achievements are unbelievable. However, IMO, Steve Nicol is easily the best right back we've had in my lifetime.

There aren't enough old bastards on this forum, if there were Chris Lawler would win this at a canter.

Steve Nicol was the best from that lot, despite it being a high quality lineup. Fantastic defender who got forward with purpose, and scored more than a FB had a right to.

I voted Heggem. I couldn't bear him not getting any votes, he was ace.
I liked Heggem too, he could have been a great player. Nicol is the one though, but Neal and Babbel aren't far off.

I just checked his scoring ratio against that of Chris Lawler because I figured Chrissy was even more prolific - their records were remarkably similar, averaging a goal every 9-10 games during their careers for us (even more remarkable given that neither took penalties).

I don't remember Lawler mate, but if he was on a par with Nicol he must have been a top player.

Well I did go for Rob Jones, on the basis of what might have been, but Nicol and Lawler were fantastic contenders.

IMO Doc he was as good as Nicol defensively but better going forward. I have been looking for that "100 players who shook the Kop" link to post the Chris Lawler video but have failed to locate it as yet.

No, he did, he tooks pens, but he used to get forward a lot.
I didn't think Lawler took penalties. I know Neal definitely did though.

Based on what they won and who I have seen more of (seen neither of them live but more footage of Neal) I would sadly have to go for Neal. Shame, because he is a cunt.

I don't agree that he was better than Stevie Nicol going forward. In fact I'd say the opposite if anything. Lawler was dangerous in the box but Nicol had that AND laid on lots for others with his overlapping.

Nicol did play more often at RB but I'd pick him at LB (where he also played a fair bit) to make sure he got in the side. My vote for RB is a toss-up between Markus Babbel and Rob Jones, and Babbel edges it for his goals. I understand the point about them not having played for us for that long, but I don't agree with it. IMO votes like this should be decided on innate talent, not the length of a player's career, which can be affected by so many other things outside his control.

In an era when most full backs were violent assassins (e.g. Gerry Byrne at left back ;D ) Chris Lawler was an incredibly cultured player who never let anyone get past him through sheer positional sense and reading the game. 🙂
