Real Madrid have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Villarreal for Manuel Pellegrini to become their new coach.

The 55-year-old, who lists Argentinian giants River Plate amongst his former clubs, will be officially presented on Tuesday at midday local time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

A statement from Real Madrid read: "Real Madrid and Manuel Pellegrini have reached a deal for the Chilean coach to be the first team head coach during the forthcoming season.''

Pellegrini, who has been in charge of Villarreal since 2004 and had a year left on his contract with the Yellow Submarine, will replace Juande Ramos in the Madrid hotseat.

Ramos was installed as an interim boss on a six-month contract when he took over from Bernd Schuster in December and had a mixed spell in charge. In La Liga he guided Madrid to a remarkable run where Los Blancos picked up 52 from a possible 54 points to close the gap on leaders Barcelona.

However, his side also lost 6-2 at home to arch-rivals Barca and suffered a 5-0 aggregate defeat to Liverpool in the last 16 of the Champions League, a tournament eventually won by Barca as part of an historic trophy treble.

Pellegrini is now the man who has been tasked with closing the gap to Barca and fulfilling the goal of new Madrid president Florentino Perez to get the fallen Spanish giants back amongst the world elite.

Perez was unveiled as the club's new president on Monday and vowed to bring back the galactico era he was famous for during his first stint in charge at Madrid, when he brought Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and David Beckham to the club.

Perez said: "We are working towards and we will work to create a spectacular project, and that is to make Real Madrid the best club in the world once more.

"A club like Real Madrid needs to have several of the best players in the world and even though I can't discuss names today, we have a spectacular project on the sporting side."

Pellegrini is the man who will mastermind this new era and although he failed to lead Villarreal to any major trophies during his time at El Madrigal, the Chilean did help make the Yellow Submarine one of Spain's best clubs.

In his first season in charge he led the unfashionable east-coast outfit to a third-place finish, while in their subsequent Champions League campaign in the 2005/06 season Pellegrini took Villarreal to the semi-finals where they were unfortunate to lose to Arsenal.

Last season Villarreal ended up as runners-up behind champions Madrid, while this term they ended the campaign in fifth spot.

Pellegrini has also enjoyed success at previous sides, winning silverware in Chile, Argentina and Ecuador during spells at River Plate, San Lorenzo, Liga de Quito and Universidad Catolica

He's done a really good job with Villareal ... Let's see if he can take it up a notch.

Well, it was expected, but still sucks. I liked Pelligrini and his 'project' at Villareal. He's done an amazing job there and it'll be interesting to see how they adapt to losing him.

Good appointment by Real.

Thats an excellent choice by Real. He'll do a great job.

And then he'll be sacked.

Ha! Indeed. Will be interesting to see who he signs from Villareal. Gonzalo or Cazorla would be my guess.

the new Sporting director of Real Madrid, Valdano said this in 2007:

The former Real Madrid coach and World Cup winner Jorge Valdano has attacked Rafael Benítez and Jose Mourinho, insisting that they are ushering in a bleak future for football and likening the Champions League semi-final between Liverpool and Chelsea to "a shit hanging from a stick".

The Argentinian, who scored in the 1986 World Cup final and has a respected reputation as a football intellectual, claimed that Mourinho and Benítez mistrust talent because of their own failure to make it as players and said their approach is bad news for the game.

Writing in Spain's best-selling newspaper, Marca, Valdano insisted: "Football is made up of subjective feeling, of suggestion - and, in that, Anfield is unbeatable. Put a shit hanging from a stick in the middle of this passionate, crazy stadium and there are people who will tell you it's a work of art. It's not: it's a shit hanging from a stick.

"Chelsea and Liverpool are the clearest, most exaggerated example of the way football is going: very intense, very collective, very tactical, very physical, and very direct," he added. "But, a short pass? Noooo. A feint? Noooo. A change of pace? Noooo. A one-two? A nutmeg? A backheel? Don't be ridiculous. None of that. The extreme control and seriousness with which both teams played the semi-final neutralised any creative licence, any moments of exquisite skill.

"If Didier Drogba was the best player in the first match it was purely because he was the one who ran the fastest, jumped the highest and crashed into people the hardest. Such extreme intensity wipes away talent, even leaving a player of Joe Cole's class disoriented. If football is going the way Chelsea and Liverpool are taking it, we had better be ready to wave goodbye to any expression of the cleverness and talent we have enjoyed for a century."

Valdano explained why Benítez and Mourinho were to blame for the demise of flair and creativity. "The lives of Mourinho and Benítez have crossed in a world that is ever more scrutinised and exposed by the media, which is why they look at each other with such distrust," he wrote, "but they have two things in common: a previously denied, hitherto unsatisfied hunger for glory, and a desire to have everything under control.

"Both of those things stem from one key factor: neither Mourinho nor Benítez made it as a player. That has made them channel all their vanity into coaching. Those who did not have the talent to make it as players do not believe in the talent of players, they do not believe in the ability to improvise in order to win football matches. In short, Benítez and Mourinho are exactly the kind of coaches that Benítez and Mourinho would have needed to have made it as players."

But more importantly regarding Spanish football...

Does Athletic's copa del rey defeat to barca mean they are in the Europa league since barca are in the European cup? I know they would be if it was the FA cup, is Spain the same?

According to Wiki, they're in, which I don't think is a particularly good thing for them.

Que the "mass exodus" transfer rumours from Villareal. I'll take Santi Cazorla please....although saying that he has said in the past he wouldnt join Real Madrid, I can still see him following Pelegrini there.

Strange move from a club who normally go for a bigger manager but this could work for them.

Will be interesting to see if he can handle superstars.

How is supposed to overall this Barca team though?

Ironically enough, isn't Pellegrini the current longest serving manager (for a single club) in La Liga? Shrewd decision from Real, but it's hard to see how he'll do just yet.

Heh, well, I doubt Pelligrini will be trying to overhaul Barcelona by taking to the field himself. It will more likely be attempted by spending obscene amounts of money on new players.

If valdano is such a great Sports director why the hell did they fire him a few years ago to hire that Serbian shit on a stick?

Well this is the club that sacked Capello and Del Bosque after title winning seasons.
