More commonly known as the Adams apple. Couldn't keep my eyes off it.
I think you know who I'm referring to.

Ayala had a good game. Wasn't really that challenged but responded well to most of the situations he was put in. Could improve his distribution though.

Why are we signing the Greek defender?
I mean Skrtel will be back soon and we haven't got any difficult opponents before then.

And you'd trust an inexperienced Ayala in a champions league game if Agger and Skrtel are injured? It was Stoke tonight, I'd have look composed at the back against them.

He did the essentials well - heading the ball out of the danger area - and congrats to him for that. But he's obviously very young and raw, and Agger's injury problems might not be as temporary as we all hope. I think a cheap, experienced CB is a good signing.

The question was asked as to why we are buying an experienced Greek defender kid. Calm down.
Ayala did well in his first game against a team that were hardly going to muster an attack.

That's shit, he had a ton of very physical defending to do in the first half, and he did it. Great experience for him.

better he gets his first game under those conditions!!

Dossena needs to share his lunch with him.

He seriously needs to bulk up, he got pushed off the ball a few times this evening, other than that I was quite impressed with him, I thought he done okay on Sunday too. Nothing spectacular, but tidy enough, which in the context of a young player playing his first couple of first team prem games is praiseworthy in itself.

Agreed. And Rafa needs to be doing more of this this season - giving a game to all these foreign kids he's bought against the relegation fodder. e.g Give N'Gog a go upfront in a 442 with Torres against some of the rubbish.

x2

He's not even had a full season in the reserves so to come up against a team like Stoke who gave us a lot of defending to do in the first half is not the easiest tasks. He was clearly pretty nervous about not making any mistakes and is still raw, but all in all, he did well.

I wonder why he gets in ahead of Kelly. Seen as a better prospect long-term? Better in training? Better footballing brain? Hmmm...

Taller?

Rafa did mention how pleased he was with the way he won balls in the air in his post match interview.

He's only a young lad, he did well enough but as I said in the Johnson thread, throw a better team into the mixer and well .. who know's.

Never the less, it was a solid enough performance.

Martin Kelly is quite tall himself. He's also got a bit of pace and at least on the face of things, seems stronger.

Maybe he's mentally stronger and Rafa thought he'd be able to cope with the step up to the first team better than Kelly would.

He seemed surprisingly cool out there. Also there was absolutely no nonsense, he took the safest option every time.
Nice to see Carra giving him the ball over and over in the 2nd half too, "go on son, hoof it to Torres".

i thought he played well and is exactly the 4th choice centre back. the greek lad isn't exactly great is he?

kelly i hope will be rotated with johnson in the carling cup games and 10 minutes here and there

This kid has a look of a real footballer. He is thin as a pencil and physically looks like a boy among men, but he has that quiet confidence that tells me he will definitely make it in professional football. What remains to be seen is if he will make it at world-class level.

we're signing a 2m 30 yr old so he and kelly can go back to the reserves
[/quote]

Nah. We might buy him for 2 and flock him off for 5. Nice little earner that. They might say he fell off the back of a lorry.

I think it's fair to say with rafa's latest purchase rafa doesn't think either (ayala or kelly) are ready. I just wish sami had bided his time he would have seen plenty of game time I'm sure.

We have to remember that 18 is VERY young for a CB. He probably hasn't even finished growing yet, and it's one of those positions (like goalkeeper) where experience is hugely important. I was encouraged by Ayala's performance, and if we treat him and Kelly the right way (to loan or not to loan?) they could both eventually make it.

Didn't know that he was only 18 years old.
I guess it is to early for him to be fourth choice.
Regarding Kelly, I'd say that I'm also a bit bemused why he isn't ahead of Ayala but I guess Rafa knows best. Maybe Kelly is a fullback, that's the position he had at Huddersfield.
I'm not the least bit excited about the Greek centerback, I still think it's an unnecesary purchase considering the fact that we've got Skrtel and Agger on the mend. The three of them are international players, looking to start in the world cup. Isn't it too much competition?

I thought Ayala was 20?

Anyway, his defending was good. He was obviously suffering from debut nerves, which is probably why he kept putting it out for so many throws. Mind you, its better that he just cleared it than doing anything fancy. I think that helped contribute to the effectiveness of his performance.

The poor lad was obviously crapping himself when in extended possession and the crowd were good to support him (as you'd expect).

Overall, a very encouraging debut.
