Centenary Stand to be renamed The Kenny Dalglish Stand

LFC
Liverpool FC are delighted to announce Anfield's Centenary Stand is to be renamed The Kenny Dalglish Stand in recognition of the 66-year-old's unique contribution to the club.
The decision has been taken by the Reds’ ownership, led by principal owner John W Henry, to honour the special status Dalglish holds at Anfield in the club’s 125th anniversary year.
The Scot’s Liverpool love affair has spanned nearly four decades, beginning back in 1977 when he initially moved to Merseyside from Celtic, through to the present day where he currently holds the position of non-executive board director.
Liverpool Football Club is blessed to have had many figures of significance all contribute to its illustrious history – and they are also rightly honoured in various different ways.
However, Dalglish’s legacy is distinctive because of how his influence has crossed over so many different areas.
In football terms, he enjoyed two successful spells as manager in addition to 515 appearances and 172 goals as a player. In total, he lifted eight league championships, three European Cups, two FA Cups, five League Cups and one UEFA Super Cup.
Off the field, his contribution is simply immeasurable to the club and the city of Liverpool because of the leadership role he played in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster and the support he and his family have provided over the years to the relatives of those who lost their lives.
Furthermore, he and his wife Marina set up the ‘Marina Dalglish Appeal’ back in 2005 in Liverpool, a charity which aims to help those who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families on Merseyside.
Dalglish’s values are the embodiment of ‘The Liverpool Way’, the ethos of Liverpool FC – and it is for this reason the club have moved to honour him in this way.

Speaking on behalf of Fenway Sports Group, John W Henry said: “It is testament to Liverpool’s history and status that we are not lacking in truly great individuals, whose names could easily grace a stand at Anfield.
“But in Kenny Dalglish we have a person who carries such immense significance to the fabric of this club, so it feels somewhat incumbent on us to recognise this in a manner that is befitting to the man.
“He is unique, not just to Liverpool, but to the game in England as a whole, having achieved greatness as a player and then enjoyed such success as a manager. His record and trophies won on both fronts speak for themselves.
“However, Kenny’s contribution to Liverpool goes beyond goals scored, points amassed and silverware placed in the cabinet. His values are Liverpool’s values – he represents what is best about this football club.
“The leadership and solace he gave to individuals, the club and city as it tried to come to terms with the trauma and tragedy of Hillsborough transcended sporting achievement.
“His name is synonymous with our club, with our home and the city of Liverpool. Now it will be as visible as it is palpable.”
The official renaming ceremony will take place at a later date this year, which will be confirmed in due course.
Liverpool chairman Tom Werner added: “We recognise this won’t sit comfortably with Kenny’s default position of humility and self-deprecation. But as we approach the club’s 125th anniversary year, now is the right time in the club’s illustrious history to leave this legacy. He and his family should know the privilege and honour is all ours – his name means so much to so many and its prominence at Anfield will enrich an already prestigious sporting cathedral.
“For decades he has served the club and the city, with the steadfast attitude that the collective always comes ahead of the individual. This announcement isn’t about singling him out – it’s about recognising that his name embodies values we all strive to honour and his name represents all that we are proud of when identifying ourselves as Liverpool Football Club.”

Am I becoming too cynical thinking that this is being announced ahead of the renaming of the Main Stand under a commercial deal?

I don't think that is cynical, I think that is a good gesture.. add sentiment to one stand and a bit of commercial nous for the other. Two shit names for stands at present so i'm in favour of both getting renamed - and absolute bonus if we get some cash in the process.

Nah. I was afraid it came now to appeace the fans over a limited transfer summer!!

Anyway great tribute to our finest man, and distant enough to his successes so it doesn't shadow any current manager at any time!

I have obviously become a cynic then.
Who would have thought.

I saw 'Kenny Dalglish' was trending and I swear I went cold. This is wonderful news and so richly deserved. As player and manager, for his contribution on and off the field, he is quite simply the most significant individual in the club's history. He would hate that, but he just is. I love the guy, genuinely love him.

Nope. First thing I said when I saw it on SSN is that it'll be the centenary named after him & the main stand named after dunkin donuts. My mate laughed. I didn't.

Although he deserves each & every plaudit he is ever given, as he's literally been the heartbeat of this club for decades.

Lovely news.

I'm sure some cynics will point out that the lizard-owners did this to curry favour or whatever, which I'm sure there's an element of truth in, but... They didn't have to do it did they? It's not like people were clamouring for this. Credit where it's due - it's an impressive move on their part.

The club has been working the message for a while that the Main Stand will be renamed at some point for commercial purposes. I think they should be somewhat comfortable with the lack of noise raised (as far as I know) about that eventuality, so I don't think they'll need to make any attempts at appeasement.

Wish Bugsy were honoured as well. Although I'm not sure if the Dalglish - Moran Stand sounds too much like a double barreled surname.

I can see them renaming the newly expanded training complex after Ronnie Moran, which perhaps would be most apt.

I can't think there will actually be any serious outcry about the renaming of the main stand. Yes - some old school will cry about modern football, but there won't be any serious push back given the majority of fans are in favour of finding ways to compete financially with our competitors. Initiatives like this also place less onus on needing to increase ticket prices.

Yeah, as long as it isn't anything too fucking stupid or crass, I'm not sure it's a massive problem with stadium revenue and sponsorship.

I've always been sceptical of the value to sponsors anyway, especially for naming a stand.

Agreed. Stadium I can understand, when they stipulate that tv stations need to name it by the sponsor's name - but stand doesn't seem any more effective than just having good in game advertising on the boards..

daft quesiton - but wouldn't the commercial rights for the Kemlyn, Centenary, King Kenny Stand be more lucrative as that is the one that can be seen on live matches? The main stand is invisible to the TV audiences

Yeah, and they cost two parts of fuck all to buy

I don't think the top of the stand where you'd likely have the name would be visible in a normal tv shot. The main stand, given its revamp probably has a lot more appeal as it is modern, well designed and the area around it is to become the focal point of the stadium/ ground.
