When I first considered us making the CL, I thought it was wishful thinking, and it is, BUT, it's not silly optimism. We definitely can't drop points like the ones to Wigan at home..

Feb 27 8:30 AM ET West Ham United v Liverpool
Mar 6 8:30 AM ET Liverpool v Manchester United
Mar 20 9:30 AM ET Sunderland v Liverpool
Apr 2 10:00 AM ET West Bromwich Albion v Liverpool
Apr 10 10:00 AM ET Liverpool v Manchester City
Apr 16 10:00 AM ET Arsenal v Liverpool
Apr 23 10:00 AM ET Liverpool v Birmingham
Apr 30 10:00 AM ET Liverpool v Newcastle United
May 7 10:00 AM ET Fulham v Liverpool Craven Cottage
May 15 10:00 AM ET Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur
May 22 11:00 AM ET Aston Villa v Liverpool Villa Park

Currently we are on 39 points, with 33 more on offer. If we went on a Rafa, 2008/2009 style run, let's say with one loss, and two draws, and win the rest, we could end up with 65 points

Spurs have a pretty tight run in v Arsenal, City, Chelsea, and us - right there, they could drop 6 points out of 12. That would bring us within a whisker of them. Plus they could drop the points in games against relegation fodder too..

Feb 26 Postp Tottenham Hotspur P - P Arsenal White Hart Lane
Mar 6 11:00 AM ET Wolverhampton Wanderers v Tottenham Hotspur
Mar 19 8:45 AM ET Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United
Apr 2 10:00 AM ET Wigan Athletic v Tottenham Hotspur
Apr 9 10:00 AM ET Tottenham Hotspur v Stoke City
Apr 16 10:00 AM ET Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur
Apr 23 10:00 AM ET Tottenham Hotspur v West Bromwich Albion
Apr 30 10:00 AM ET Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur
May 7 10:00 AM ET Tottenham Hotspur v Blackpool
May 15 10:00 AM ET Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur
May 22 11:00 AM ET Tottenham Hotspur v Birmingham

Let's say Spurs lose to Arsenal, Liverpool, Citeh and draw with Chelsea (perfect). PLus they also drop points to two lower half teams.

They have 47 points and would end up with 62

For Chelsea they would need to lose to United (once), Draw a second time, lost to City, and draw with Spurs? Throw in two more defeats to Blackpool, Newcastle, Everton or Stoke - they are currently on 45 points. This kind of a run would see them end on 65 points. Level with us...

CHELSKI

May 14 10:00 AM ET Chelsea v Newcastle United
May 22 11:00 AM ET Everton v Chelsea Goodison Park
Chelsea P - P Birmingham

It's all unlikely, BUT, if they lose to bigger opposition, and we throw in a loss or two to the lower end of the league, it's game on.

Fingers and toes well and firmly crossed over to you Kenny!

Was just thinking about it today...

We play Arsenal, ManU, Man City & Spurs.

Spurs play Arsenal, ManU, Man City & Liverpool.

Chelsea play ManU x 2, Man City & Arsenal.

So our run in is more or less the same. Only thing is we've got nothing to play for other than the league. I'd be quite optimistic about our chances if I was only talking about Chelsea or Spurs, but both? Hopefully 🙂

The best we can hope for is 5th really. Maybe had we beaten Wigan...

I think Wigan was pivotal in our chase for 4th. Beat the Gooners and Spurs. The Spurs game is effectively a 6 pointer for us. We'll have to hit a purple patch but we're capable of doing it. One game at a time but I'm hopeful.

5th at the best for us!

Hopefully a resurgent Chelsea who has to play Man U twice will win and stop them from winning number 19. That is why we can only hope for 5th.

I was glancing through the remaining premier league schedule yesterday, and I think if anyone is going to pip the scum to #19 it will actually be Arsenal. Their remaining schedule is something like every relegation fodder team, LFC, and the scum if I recall correctly and they're only 4 points behind the scum. Absurdly easy schedule. The scum have a difficult run in, as do Chelsea.

Yup, if Chelsea will do them a favour by beating or drawing Man U twice!

That's still a difficult run in, three top teams at home, one away and a few battlers on the road like Sunderland and Villa. West Ham will be a difficult match too because they're creating alot of chances and putting a few away aswell.

The Wigan draw was a real slap in the face. I'd have been cautiously hopeful if we'd be sitting 6 points behind Spurs now.

We'll hopefully have Gerrard, Agger and Carroll back, which will lift our game. Here's hoping as a CL spot would be massive for us.

Carroll will be a great addition to the front line and will give us variation too, we definitely need Gerrard and Agger back though.

It's a footballing cliche 'each game is like a cup-tie' but I think it applies. We have to scrap for every point we can get. The team has enough quality to win most of those games and only full commitment will bring results.

always makes me laugh when people do runs in and conviently chalk off points the oppersition would normally win while at the same time give us crucial points to finish about them.

gaining CL now with so few games would require a chelsea and spurs implosion while we have a near flawless run in. I'm just happy roy has gone and we haven't been drawn into a relagation scrap.

I'm just going to enjoy the rest of the season and not worry about whether we're make the Champions' League or not.

Isn't challenging for titles/CL spots a major part of enjoying following your team?
So there's nothing wrong with toying with potential (even if a little far fetched) CL spot.

It would be very, very unlikely BUT those saying we have "no chance" need a word with themselves. That's what we all said at half-time in Istanbul.

Bring it on. 8)

If it was ONE team, then theres a slim chance especially if we had to play them again.
I dont want to think we can do it because its false hope.
The only thing in our favour is the Champions league games for them both.

True. I just don't know if I'll be able to take the disappointment if we miss it by the skin of our teeth after all that has happened this season.

Yeah, but back then we had players like, Traoré, Smicer, Baros, Cissé, Josemi and Nunez.
We don't have that kind of quality any more.
I'm sorry but I don't think there's a chance.

there is a difference between one match where you can control the destiny of the other team (no matter how improbable) and several games where not only will you more than likely have to average 2 points per game till the end of the season you need TWO teams to fuck up and you only play one of those teams.

Never say never, but I agree with Neil. There was more chance of us winning in Istanbul than getting fourth now.

I remember thinking at the time that FSG were writing off the season way to early by keeping Roy on board. I still believe had they acted three-four weeks earlier, we'd be potentially pushing for forth now. They dithered, and ah well.

It's a long shot, but not unreasonable. We need Spurs to choke against big opposition, and to get a drubbing from a lower team, or hell even draw a few. Chelsea just need to continue their poor form, AND also lose a few to united - draw with Spurs.

and YES, we need an amazing run as well. It's very possible under this manager.

I remember how impossible it was for Ireland to qualify for Euro 88, and all the things that needed to happen happened. So I always have a little faith 😉

Could be possible! The league is so unpredictable and there are plenty of games left! Chelse dont look like they will ever get back to form and Spurs choked at Blackpool last night! Dont write us off!
