Anyone else going to be following this? I love this sort of stuff.
Ranulph Fiennes and 5 others attempting to cross the entire continent of Antarctica, which has never been done before.
The winter crossing is more than 2000 miles in temperatures dropping close to -90c and operating in near permanent darkness.
They set off from the UK on 6th December 2012 and will reach the beginning of the Antarctica crossing on 21st March 2013. The crossing will then take 6 months.
A two man ski unit will lead the trek, followed by two 20 ton tractors that will be pulling what are essentially a mobile home and a mobile science lab.
If things go wrong, there will be no rescue possible, as aircraft cannot fly in such cold conditions due to the threat of their fuel freezing. They will have to wait until summer to be rescued.
They are attempting to raise $10m for charity (Seeing is Believing), which is getting match-funded by Standard Chartered.
