That doesn't happen anymore

Inspired by the "man-marking" comment in another thread (don't fret Mark, I'm not insinuating you meant it!) I thought it'd be interesting to list the things that are barely fucking existent in modern football.

I'm not saying they never happen, of course there are exceptions, but by and large the list below is bygone days shit.

You'll also note that this list is for my fucking sanity. Feel free to add others.

- The term 'Best 11'

*breathes*

- Traditional wingers on their 'normal' wing

- Offside. It's fucking dead. Sides don't bother playing for it.

- Man-marking

- Box-to-box midfielders

- 4-4-2

- Striking 'partnerships'. Unless you want to call a number 10 a 'striker.

What have I missed?

I know who killed that one...

Some of those are obvious... some could perhaps do with a bit of expanding on.

"Offside. It's fucking dead. Sides don't bother playing for it."

So I'm guessing you're not suggesting that teams never employ this as a tactic any more because that's simply not true (I watched a team disgrace themselves against Barca trying this out a few weeks ago) so it's more of a downward trend? If so, why?

"Box-to-box midfielders"

Definitely a decline in this respect too. What would we call players like Ramires and Yaya Toure though?

3-5-2 and wing backs (which are part of the same phenomena) aren't quite dead.

But then again, off sides aren't dead either.

A manageress. You never see that anymore...

Howze ref - offside traps are dead and gone. They're with O'Leary..

References to Roy of the Rovees are gone..

But the out and out winger who makes the byline on a regular basis and cuts it back or crosses it in for a header. That's the one you rarely see. A real skill that is. Tricky winger.

I see man marking during corners and free kicks every week in the premier league. Some teams go full on man marking, others a mix of zonal and man marking, with the occasional full on zonal marking.
Don't see how it 'doesn't happen anymore'.

Managers/ board members with sheepskin coats.

One of the defenders taking goal kicks.

Keepers wearing caps/ smoking pipes.

Libero - sammer showed what could be done. No one has followed, hoddle had a bizarre attempt with redknapp. If you had the right player then this position would be unplayable.

wing half

Judge Jules' throwing his school cap in the air in pure glee when Billy Liddell scored his first goal for Liverpool

Guess I should be grateful to get away with "school cap" as opposed to "flat hat". 😀
