Sunderland (H)

I really hope we get an early goal today open Sunderland up.

Fletcher on the break will be a massive threat as he doesn't need much of a chance.

A win is a must with out set of fixtures coming up and Chelsea and Spurs finding their stride.

I'm reasonably confident about this one; not sure why when I look at the records but I just think we're playing well enough to open them up.

2-0. Gerrard and Sterling

Like I said, he's done it this month (December) already.

He dictated the play from midfield against Fulham - was his best performance to that point of the season. Ran the show.

I might also point out that it was also a case of him enjoying having Lucas there again.

Yes - against a Fulham missing their 2 normal starting central midfielders.

.... and how did the same lineup go in the next match against Stoke.

Of course Gerrard will excel from time to time in a deeper roll against opponents that are kind enough to give him every opportunity to do so.

Again.... He'll be more consistently effective further forward, closer to Suarez.

Just out of curiosity; why do people want a three at the back?

Because Enrique is out and we don't have a second 'real' LB in the squad. The only real option is Johnson which requires us playing Wisdom at RB.

Our squad is paper thin.

Bloody hell, Stevie, you're not going to let this go are you?? 😡

The point of Stevie next to Lucas is that the captain seems to have a confidence in Lucas to be there when needed. A front 4 of Sterling, Suso, Downing and Suarez should be enough to hold the attention of the Sunderland defense. If Stevie has confidence in Lucas then he basically has a free role to come forward and pick his spot.

As we've all seen, he's not really a box to box player anymore - at least not at this point. If he's got the freedom to come from deep without too many defensive shackles he should find a little more space - which is all he seems to need right now to influence the game.

Because I usually don't disagree with anything you post 🙂

I think it's fundamental to why we're loosing matches we shouldn't - or more importantly conceding when we shouldn't.

With a front 3, an attacking mid in behind them and both full backs getting forward at every opportunity, giving Gerrard license to roam leaves us too open to getting murdered on the counter as we're leaving only Lucas & the 2 CB's focusing solely on defense.

Leaving Allen or Henderson to support Lucas will give Gerrard a better platform to do what he does best.
Houllier used Hamman, Murphy & McAllister to do it. Benitez used Alonso, Lucas & Mascherano to do it.

The sooner Rodgers figures out its better to utilize Allen, Lucas & Henderson to do it the better.

Suso can be gently broken in to the role as Gerrard's understudy.

Bollocks it will be 345am when the match is played and I can't scrounge another telecommuting session tomorrow.

Have The Scum still got to go to the Sports Direct@Change The Name Every Other Week Arena ?

team v Sunderland: Reina, Wisdom, Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Gerrard, Henderson, Lucas, Downing, Sterling, Suarez.

Hope that central 3 in midfield do the job, they're what I wanted to see. Would have preferred Downing to go to fullback, imo offensively skilled fullbacks are important than having solid fullbacks at home if the opposition turn up for the draw.

Henderson really is the new Lucas. He's going to be in our team for a decade and hardly ever get injured.
