Revealed: Arsene Wenger opens up on how close he was to signing Luis Suarez from Liverpool

Arsene Wenger has revealed the details behind Arsenal’s failed bid to sign Luis Suarez from Liverpool, as he confirmed the Uruguayan had agreed to make the move to the Gunners in the summer of 2013.
Arsenal famously bid £1 over the £40m buy-out clause Suarez was believed to have in his Liverpool contract, with Wenger claiming in an interview with beIN Sports that the striker was ‘very close’ to becoming at Arsenal player.
Liverpool officials were furious with Arsenal’s attempts to sign their star player and blocked the move, inspiring Suarez to do all he could to try and engineer a move away from Anfield before finally agreeing to stay for a final season.
Now Wenger had opened up on the story for the first time, with his version of events suggesting a deal for the striker now at Barcelona was within touching distance.
“We had an agreement with the players and we had been wrongly advised that he had a clause (in his contract),” stated Wenger.
“You can ask the player. He will confirm that he wanted to join us.
“Then they kept him one more year, improved his contract and promised to sell him to a club abroad.”
Wenger went on to criticise Suarez’s disciplinary issues, as he suggested the striker who has been caught biting opponents on the field on three separate occasions deserved to be punished.
“It’s not normal, you cannot accept that,” said Wenger of Suarez’s antics. “He had some behaviours that were shocking. He deserved to be punished.
“I think, as well, you don’t see them any more for the last two or three years. He got rid of all the things that were a handicap for him and you don’t see that any more.
“He is still borderline in terms of what strikers do, going down in the box, but you want that from an intelligent striker.

Wenger clearly trying to show he has all the attributes to take over at Spurs after he leaves Arsenal

Could it be that this was the very incident where he lost his grip on reality? It would be nice to think that we in some way contributed to his present predicament.

That's just the way to convince your fans that you're ready to concentrate on rebuilding your team - reminiscing about a transfer that didn't happen several years ago. What next - a chat about what went wrong in the League Cup Final against Birmingham in 2011? The man's off his chump.

...Again, isn't this him admitting tapping up?

We didn't give him permission to discuss with the player did we?

Xabi Alonso stuck the boot in too. They could have signed him for £18m, he says he would have gone. Arsenal bid £15m. Ooops.

It's not exactly "opening up" because we know all this shit anyway.

How can you be very close to signing a player when you haven't even had an offer accepted by the selling club? By this logic I was very close to buying an Aston Martin the other day when I longingly look into the dealership.

Did you read the full article?
Basically he said he agreed personal terms with Suarez's agent. Which as you know, is against the rules.

Pretty much every club does it nowadays. Reina was very open about how Rafa called him and this was before the club agreed fees and all. Same with Torres.

Not disputing that, just saying that a deal can't be very close if you haven't even spoke to the person selling.

So the agent advised arsenal incorrectly of the clause? How does an agent manage that ?

Maybe he was misleading Arsenal,so as to use them as a stalking-horse for the club Suarez really wanted the move to. Maybe he was hoping to generate a bidding war with Barca. It's hard to believe he didn't know what he was doing. Anyway, Wenger is a fool to be talking about it now as he came out with egg on his face big time.He really has lost the plot.Long may he reign.

Kenny told him to fuck off.
Right to his face.
It was brilliant.

I understood that there was a clause but that it was badly worded and said something like "if we get an offer above £40m then we will consider it"
