Sturridge

i think the original quote was from talksport. i remember seeing it there yesterday when listening to commoli.

For the record i always support the players that play for liverpool. Don't believe in booing players and all that crap that i see many fans do. But sturridge isn't a liverpool player yet so just giving my opinion.
Fair enough. Let's hope, if he does sign, that you are wrong. Although I can see that you may be right. All opinions aint it?

the thing is though that lewandowski isn't going to come here when he's got top clubs in europe that want him.

He's already at a top club and he hardly needs to take a step down. Sadly that's what we are right now.

Sadly I think Sturridge and Ince are about our level right now.

Lean times in the tribiani household
Lean lean lean.

I think that's generally true, although we convinced Suarez to stay, as well as Agger and Skrtl. I'm sure there are players in that top bracket who would come to us because of our past.

I doubt Suarez would have come without it. That said, we'll lose these and other players if we can't convince them that we're serious about getting back up there.

We are still Liverpool FC.

One of the most famous and well-respected clubs and brands in the world of football.

Remember, form is temporary.

Thats bleary eyed sentimental wank.
Footballers go where the money is. And where they can compete.

Partly disagree, Oncy. We wouldn't have got Suarez and we wouldn't still be selling scads of football shirts etc.if we weren't what Kristian rightly says we are. Where I *would* agree (and I suspect Kristian would too) is that reputation isn't enough on its own in the longer term.

Of course it is.

Luckily for us there's still loads of footballers out there for whom bleary eyed sentimental wank is an important part of football too.

Money comes and money goes, one day it's Citeh that got them, or Malaga, or Zenit, the next day it's someone else.

And then there's a handful of clubs that'll always be there or thereabouts because what they are build upon is stronger and bigger than any money.

I dont think we had fallen quite as far when Suarez signed.
Theres not a top player in the world who would sign for us today, unless we offered them a bucket load of cash.
I dont think it will last forever, but the 'We are Liverpool' thing is nonsense.
We got the best players and won the most BECAUSE we were the best team.
Players move first for money then for success.
Last is because they fancy a given club.
If we compete with Juventus and United for a player we wont get them
If we compete with Stoke and Rennes we will.
We are somewhere in the middle right now, with Lazio, Benfica, Spurs etc.
The name Liverpool means fuck all when you are about to go your fourth year out of the top tournament in Europe and are AGAIN five points off relegation halfway through the season.
We need the Sturridge, Ince, Shelvey, Sterling era to hopefully move us back up the league. Because without that or sugar daddy levels of investment we are on a hiding to nothing.
WE ARE LIVERPOOL............yes.....we are West Brom......above you!!

Rubbish. And a bit tragic.

I just dont buy it is all. Didnt work for Nottingham Forest or Leeds or St Ettiene or Borusia Moechengladbach or Steau Bucharest or Hamberg or Any other club who had consistent success in an era. We have no right to be a success. The teams who succeed are the best run, and we have been a fucking shambles for a decade. An embarrassing shambles.

How could we not still be a big club with this man in charge? He's got a bike and everything.

It would be tragic if you were right, that history, pedigree and such didn't mean anything to anybody in todays football. Luckily you are wrong, it does still count, more to some than others, obviously, but it's still a factor and one we can and will use in out favour especially in dire times like these.

Liverpool FC is still a major club and one that can attract the top talents of the world. Of course they'd ask for money, that's in the nature of football today, but there are players that are not first and foremost looking at the digits in the contract.

Rafa's much-celebrated bleary-eyed sentimental wank disappeared as soon as Abramovich called.
In his favour, he was out of a job. I guess most unemployed today would accept a £2M salary job a year, even if you had to work for the Russians.

I know its tragic mate. Thats why football is shit. Players only care about their contracts. If they gave a fuck about history and value of a club then Chelsea and City wouldnt be the successes they are.
We cant attract a motherfucking thing on the name Liverpool. A history is just that a history.

I don't think it's all quite as grim as you make it look. I am not saying there isn't any truth in it, there is, and that there are players only driven by money, there are just also signs that things could slowly move in a different direction in some areas of the world at least.

Players from parts of the world where money is hard to come by won't blink twice to sign for the club that offers you the most (Hulk being the latest candidate imo), and it's hard to blame them really. The question is however, is there any true value in these kind of signings over time? (For both club and player) I am just not so sure. There will be exceptions to the rules of course, there always is, but most teams build with mercenaries if you like won't last long.

There are also tendencies that especially younger, mainly European players are not so fast to jump the gun, just because City, Chelsea or someone else comes running with gazillions of cash. They value playing-time, nature of the workplace (i.e. youth setup facilities) and the room for development higher than a fast cash injection, at least that's how I see it. All parametres where we can compete just as well if not better.

Combined with the fact Liverpool is still a major footballing brand worldwide we are not in as bad a state as some are trying to make it appear.

...and here's a quote from one of the most coveted young footballers in the game from yesterdays Guardian:

"Money has never been a motivation. I have chosen football before that every time and I still do that. I'm addicted to football. When I get outside, I just want to stay on the training pitch."

Give that lad a firm, trimmed pitch, a roundly shaped leather ball and new pair of boots and he'll die for the Liverbird.

It's Eriksen btw.

More of the same:

He added: "Chelsea is such a big club, they have so much money that if they need someone for the first team, they just buy them. Ajax buy them if they are young and they see talent. And it's easier to go to the first-team here and that was also what I saw.

"At Chelsea it was like, Under-17 own world, Under-19 own world and then the first team another world. For a [young] player it was difficult to see how there could be a possibility."

Eriksen also snubbed interest from Manchester City 18 months ago, with his desire to play regularly the main driving force behind his decision.

"Again, it was the feeling to get to a big club where they buy some new players every six months," he said.
