Sturridge

I don't think Sturridge will dictate anything, but that's not going to change the way he feels about playing anywhere but centrally. I wouldn't want us paying £12 mill.or even 12 pence for any player who's going to be dissatisfied right from the start, and after the way we've wasted money recently I'm sure BR wouldn't either. To me it follows from all that that Sturridge is predominantly going to play down the middle, not either right or left.
BR indicated that he spoke to Suarez at length about Sturridge so it may well be that Suarez gets the free no.9 role because he pops up everywhere and harries defenders no end.

Sturridge took his goal well on his debut so the additional goal threat is most welcome. I'd love to see the 2 of them dovetail and terrorise defences. Looking forward to the Scum game. I'm expecting a thriller.

i was pleasantly surprised by the clips of sturridge I have seen so far and his game yesterday, admittedly it was a first game against a non-league team. initially i was very sceptical as most british signings in double figures tend to me massive flops (manure seem to buck this trend). however, he does have pace, technique, ability to score goals and a bit of 'vision' - I liked how he could drop a bit deep and make some clever passes.

Took his goal well, the missed chances were a little worrying, bit he hasn't pursued that much footy & could understandably be rusty.

The important thing for me is that he combined well with others instantly, most notably shelvey & Johnson, proving he has talent & vision, & secondly, he got himself in the right position repeatedly, which its half the battle for a striker, if not even more than half.

I think it was very promising debut, particularly when his pace was partially nullified by playing in that gluepot of a pitch. As FFF says he combined really well and repeatedly occupied good positions. Yeah he missed a couple, but that's to be expected from any striker. Do rightly.

So we play Suarez to the right of Sturridge against The Scum... Up against their left back.....

.... well that might make for interesting viewing.

Largely agree, except to add that Suarez has been playing that role anyway. Hopefully, signing Sturridge will mean that we have more goal threat when Suarez himself isn't in the middle to provide it.

Johnson didn't play you mug

How many times have we seen a ball across the penalty box with no one in there to get on the end of it. I'd be inclined to tell Sturridge to play through the middle to spearhead the attack and give Suarez a free role to link the midfield and attack. I think it would be quite tasty. Suarez likes running about a lot. if he can get a 1-2 off Sturridge when he gets in the box then alls well that ends well.

I think Suarez has to be moved to accommodate Sturridge simply because a combination of Sturridge's pace through the middle and Suarez's constant movement has the potential to open up so much space in behind.

Sturridge also seems to have that bit more of a natural instinct to hit the box whereas Suarez is of no fixed address.

Oh and - hi!

Welcome to the forum.

Suarez shouldn't be made to accomodate anyone. But i've no problem with suarez playing just behind sturridge in a free role. Anything else and we are negating his talents. Reminds me of all the constant shuffling of gerrard over the years to accomodate other players with lesser abilities.

Welcome Windom.
I agree the pair of them will inflict damage, and as you say Suarez really has no fixed position.

regards

Liverpool have always - no, but let's say often - had at least one forward who has the licence to move around and be flexible in his position. Keegan was like that. Dalglish was like that. Actually Dalglish and Rush as a partnership were like that. Even Davey Johnson was a bit like that. The fluidity won't be anything new. It's just a good thing to try to do.

Thanks for the welcome Glen C.

I think the point here is not about moving Suarez because Sturridge is better at that job, it's more sum of their parts stuff. I believe that Sturridge through the middle with Suarez off him or in one of wing forward positions will create more space for the pair and the team as a whole than the other way around. It might reduce some of Suarez's effectiveness in front of goal but the hope is that increases the goal return for the team overall.

I'd be much more inclined to believe that Suarez would lay on more clear cut chances for Sturridge than the other way around, and as Suarez's most prolific season came as a wing forward for Ajax - I wouldn't be expecting a dramatic drop in his goal return either.

Bang on id say...Whatever is best for the team. I suppose its time for Brendan to earn his crust. Fluidity will be the key I think.

Brendan needs to take Sturridge by the face look him deep in his eyes and tell him what a special player he is....next minute...its raining goals. Could play him anywhere after that.

Thanks oncy...Love your work. Although I have not been posting much over the last 6 months due to a new addition to the family, little Robbie James Lucas Gerrard Dobalina (Name has been changed to protect the innocent) has been taking up 99% of my free time. I have still been reading the forum and you seem a little disillusioned? Keep your chin up.
