LIVERPOOL FC supporters union Spirit of Shankly have released a statement calling for American owners Fenway Sports Group to increase their presence on Merseyside and appoint a Liverpool-based chief executive.
The club face playing half the season with only two senior strikers after failing to replace loaned-out Andy Carroll before the end of the transfer window andprincipal owner John Henry yesterday wrote an open letter to supportersexplaining the club's transfer policy and admitting to 'mistakes' made in the owners' first 23 months in charge.
The statement reads:
Following yet another summer where off the pitch activities at Liverpool Football Club have dominated the headlines, we once again find the club ownership attempting to explain away business decisions that have overshadowed footballing matters.
Spirit of Shankly reiterates its stance that the position of manager at Liverpool Football Club should be supported with all of the resources at the club’s disposal.
However, events of last Friday and the subsequent “open letter” from the club’s Principal Owner, John W Henry, indicate that almost two years into FSG's ownership of the club this is not yet the case.
As pointed out by the union in May, there remains no ownership presence on this side of the Atlantic. It is our opinion that this situation has led directly to the "mistakes" alluded to in Mr Henry's open letter.
Should the club’s absentee owners not wish to establish a full-time base in Liverpool, it remains imperative that they appoint a Chief Executive of a calibre commensurate with the club’s global status, to act with the full authority of the owners in their absence.

Laughable really. SOS do know we're a business now, don't they? They sound like the world's most impotent and deluded trade union.

HELLOOOOOOOoooo! Nobody gives a fuck what you think!

I don't know why SoS bother with this kind of thing now. FSG put them firmly in their place when SoS tried to pose as *the* voice of Liverpool fans immediately after FSG took over. I guess old habits die hard.

Careful, Rael will think you're a soft lad with his fire belly.

Let me make it quite clear: We are demanding nothing from FSG except their complete and committed subservience to us, the self-appointed spokesmen - and women! - for Liverpool fans everywhere. Drawing on this absolute authority with our usual humility, good humour and impeccable responsibility, we intend to capture the attention of Mr Henry and Mr Werner by a quite breathtaking exhibition of peaceful yet dogged warfare not witnessed since the days of Fabius Maximus. There will be banners. There will be flyers. There will be abusive rosettes and noisy rattles. There will not be any armchairs! Yes, brothers - and sisters! - we will no longer allow FSG to je-opardise the fortunes of our beloved club, and we are confident we will soon have them cowering in a corner shouting 'Please put down that banner!!!' Right, next: plans for the next Christmas party. I will thus hand over to brother Kayll, who I believe has very exciting news about the black and white minstrel entertainment booking...

And their statement claims they are the self appointed spokespeople of LFC fans where exactly? Sorry I missed that part

As if by magic the bellends reappear when some dodgy rumours, half arsed journalism and blatant disregard for the facts leads them to believe someone is pocketing money.

I wonder will they be arranging another protest march between the pub they drink in an the stadium they were walking to anyway.

OK - forget the self appointd bit then ... And their statement claims they are the spokespeople of LFC fans where exactly?

That's exactly what SoS tried to claim when FSG took over, which is what I was referring to, as my post makes clear. FSG said when they arrived that they wanted close consultation with the fans, at which point SoS jumped in and said that consultation should be with them, SoS, specifically. FSG found it necessary to put out a public statement rejecting that idea and saying they would be happy to consult SoS, but only as part of a wider consultation with all fans. Incidentally the wording on that banner, "Liverpool Supporters Union", doesn't suggest that SoS have changed their view.

There aren't enough splinter groups. It's not a proper movement unless there are plenty of splinter groups and bitter infighting. This was discussed and agreed at the last meeting of The Spirit of Trotsky, shortly before a small group of us broke away to form The Real Spirit of Trotsky.

So they want the "full resources of the club" made available to the manager.

Looking to get the transfer budget cut further are they?

Errr, did any of you lot automatically slagging them off actually *read* what they're saying? They think most of our problems could be solved by appointing a suitable Cheif Exec to act in the owners' absence. I completely agree with them. I bet most of you would too if you didn't prefer to first try and make yourselves look clever and dashingly cynical by slating them.

Bollocks, Peter. If anything their championing of this (admittedly sensible) proposal risks diminishing it in FSG's eyes, because they've already shown FSG what a bunch of self-regarding blowhards they are.

It's not bollocks. You admit yourself it's a good idea.

My analysis is correct, as usual.

Peterhague is correct. A lot of you are dismissing what they say based on past prejudices. Yes, SOS have made mistakes in the past (who doesn't?) but what they ask for, a Liverpool based CEO makes perfect sense. They also don't profess to be the voice of all Liverpool supporters, they act as a voice for their members.

If they came out and said that we represent the jingoistic simple minded Liverpool fans who haven't a fucking notion of what's going on because they prefer to ignore facts and operate off the basis of nutty rumours and big conspiracy theories then I'd be okay with them.

If they don't think they speak for all supporters, they shouldn't keep on 'calling for' things like some group that thinks it speaks for all supporters. If they want to put their two penneth in alongside other fans, great.

When they say Liverpool based they mean he will work out of an office in Liverpool right? Or do they mean originally from Liverpool. If the former - it makes perfect sense. If the later - does not make any sense. 🙂

So where's Ayre based then?

You do know the difference between Chairman & CEO don't you?

Chairman. CEO. Whatever. Werner is the main man and spends all his time in America looking after us and the Red Sox. I don't think that's a good arrangement. Ayre is fantastic on the commercial side of things but I doubt his ability to perform his current role.
