Stoke away

I'd also seriously start thinking about developing a Coates-Wisdom partnership, at least in cup games, and see if they can be the part to replace Skrtel-Agger in the near future.

Skrtel and Agger with the right pairing are both top defenders. Wisdom is a long way from their class yet and to pair him with Coates at this stage would be like asking to be fired.

I am all for seeing Coates get a call in. Six goals shipped v Villa and Stoke shows somethings not working.

The Reds took the lead after two minutes against Tony Pulis's side on Wednesday night; however, Jonathan Walters equalised before Kenwyne Jones added a second and Walters made it 3-1.

"I said during the week and last week that [consistency] will be the biggest thing for the group," explained the manager during his post-match press conference.

"We were terrific at the weekend [against Fulham] but you have got to be able to put a run of games together - if not you just keep taking two or three steps forward and making one or two back and then going again.

"That's been the nature of the group over the last couple of years in terms of where we have finished. We're looking to improve that. There is still an awful lot of work to do.

"We conceded soft goals tonight after a great start. A terrific ball by Martin Skrtel and a bit of magic by Luis for our first pen of the season and Steven sticks it away perfectly. We are one-up in a difficult place to score goals.

"The first goal [we conceded] we were rather unfortunate - Skrtel slips and then Walters finishes really well. But the other two goals, we have to be better than that. The players have to be better in those moments.

"You have to earn the right to play in whatever game - and in particular when you come to here. You know you are going to get pressed. I have no doubt about the characters we have - we have some big characters and big players, but tonight it was just too easy for them."

Asked about the importance of bolstering his squad during the upcoming transfer window, the manager insisted: "I'm not thinking about that now. I'm thinking about the game tonight and reflecting on that and how we can be better because it was very disappointing.

"Credit to Stoke - what they do, they do very well. They kept working and deserved the three points. January will come and there will be one or two bits of business. But my main thought is about the next game and improving our performance level."

I just don't accept this utter blind spot Kris, what's so great that he brings to the table? Dominance? Nope. Like his run today that he goes on once every game, no one goes near him and he carries the ball 30 yards, drops his shoulder past a player and passes to no one. They're all average mate, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson, Enrique. When asked to go backs against the wall, as a unit they're awful and individually they're too error prone. There's no shape to them, no real steel within there and no one willing to grab the game and the opposition forwards by the scruff of the neck. With the right addition or two a couple of them may flourish with that added protection, but right now it much of a muchness. None of them are good enough.

No steel is the main word mark. We don't have any in the entire side.

In fairness, we don't have the players to compete with the likes of Walters and Ethrington.

To think we thought we could just turn up with a squad of internationals and expect a half decent performance - they're all overpaid, talentless and shit. That's the problem!

The "system" works for Barcelona so we know that's not the problem.

I was quite disappointed I contracted Ebola but happy I had 2 weeks to live instead of the 1 the doctor diagno.........uuuuurgh ahhhhh gurgle scream dead.

We couldn't complete passes, that's a problem in that general system referred to as football.

sums it up really. Awful, non-performance tonight. Couldn't pass for shit and so gave the ball away constantly. No excuse for that.

This season it seems as if every time the opposition counter attack we are all over the shop. We see Enrique and Johnson at full pelt trying to get back combined with a massive hole of about 30 yards in front of the back 4 that even shite teams can take advantage of.

I think if you want to get your full backs around the oppositions box then you need two deeper midfielders to cover for them and cover the gaps. And I'm still not sold on Lucas, Allen or Henderson being good enough. Gerrard was never disciplined enough to sit that deep even in his hayday. I preferred Rafas plan to use him up front as he aged, rather than plug him backwards.

Shelvey doesn't seem to have the quality to play in the hole, Suso has a touch of class but is still to lightweight / young. Shelvey might have a future as a deeper midfielder as he looks strong seems ok with the play in front of him and is not afraid to get stuck in...Does he have a good enough footballing brain, the manager should know, he seems to really like him despite his poor showings on the pitch.

Did anyone actually believe we'd win tonight? Because if you did, you're masters of your own downfall!

They have lost once at home all year, we're massively inconsistent and don't like being bullied and people expected a win?

I think therein lies the problem for some people - expectations are too fucking high.

I'm just looking forward to Old Trafford now.

If be beat those bastards in their own backyard it will almost make up for Villa and this.

Lads' expectations are often based rightly or wrongly on the top four salaries the club pays out.

i didn't expect a win , they have the best defence in the league and we can't handle teams who bully us like you say .....but you are surely allowed to hope for a better display with some fight and balls . And what is the point in playing if we don't have at least some expectations ? . And when are we going to have a positive results in a tough game ? we'd probably had one all season , the draw away at chelsea .

anyway i'd say alot of reactions are more based on the overall situation of the season so far and are just spilling out now .

I don't understand the ridiculous negativity here. Last year, we blasted Ryan and a few others for their continual posts on Kenny ... Now people are doing the same. We're shitty fans like everyone else. We're the best fans? bull-fucking-shit ... At least we're not as bad as those Manc fans who want Fergie sacked every year for whatever reason they come up with.
It's justified negativity.

Seriously Keni?

I know it's the middle of the bloody game but would be expecting better.

There were about three genuine messages that came out of this game.

First, Webb can't be held accountable for what went on. We wanted a pen and got one for a genuine pen but I've seen other refs let it go. We asked for yellows early to show Stoke they couldn't bludgeon the opposition. They got two in the first 5 minutes. He could have sent Shawcross off but then Suarez could have gotten worse for his challenge on the keeper. Thought he reffed well to be honest.

Second. How Shelvey remained on the pitch past 35 minutes is beyond me. I know Rodgers has a much better idea of what's going to work than most and knows Shelvey a lot better than us. That said, I can't remember there being a more universal agreement on a players performance in a decade. My old man nailed it - that boy is too mentally soft to perform in an environment which has intimidated him. We all know Jonjo can shoot cause we've seen him do it many times. We all know he can pass - we've seen it many times. We all know he can run - etc. He didn't do any of these in the first half. His effort on goal was humiliating, his passing was atrocious and he rarely, if ever, presented. The crowd and the opposition intimidated him and he couldn't get going. Why he was on the pitch after half time is disturbing. What's more, again I think there was universal belief - get him off, put Sterling on and get Suso in behind Luis.

Three. I think I said 5 years ago it's going to take an age to replace Sami when he finally goes but I'm surprised we haven't actually tried. We've got two very good CB's but, as was said in another thread (it might have been Ken or Del) they don't actually compliment each other. They're both quick, Skrtel has the brawn and Agger the ball playing, both read the game fairly well but neither can dominate in the air. We haven't had anyone do that in years and Coates is just more of the same, I'm afraid. Sami was obviously one of those very rare players and we won't find one like him in a hurry but we should at least be finding someone who can command the air. At the moment our DM and defense are chasing shadows; they know the ball is going to be lost in the air and they're trying to guess where it's going.

All that said and putting a high level of frustration to one side, the team is nowhere near as poor as too many on here make out. The mancs and Wigan are the only ones to have done Stoke at their place. Enrique is fast becoming a favourite for me despite my reluctance to see him signed and then my belief he had confirmed my fears last season. Now he's showing a lions heart in every contest and I love it. Downing continues to play well for, I think, 4 games in a row which probably shouldn't be a positive but actually is.

As for Rodgers - ALT is exactly right. The detractors should piss right off. It's unbelievable to hear some of the idiots on here taking the piss out of Roman but then advocating even less patience with their own managers. Best fans in the world - you're having a laugh. That Stoke crowd created a genuinely tough atmosphere and the best we can muster is to take pot shots from behind a keyboard at a manager who's had less than half a season. Get a grip. I'd hate to be in the trenches with some of you - it'd take about 3 minutes and the place would be deserted.

After 4 years I was convinced Rafa wasn't the answer in the league. After a year and a half I was unsure on Kenny but there were some bad signs. I haven't seen enough of Suso, Sterling or Shelvey to be convinced by any of them in this league. I've seen enough of Cole to know he's not what we need and I'd line up to drive him out of Anfield with the rest of you. I don't need Sky to tell me what's wrong and what the answer is. I certainly don't need the Sky generation demanding an easy recipe for success - just add water.

You want to go and see a successful team - no problem. Go and watch united, city or Chelsea. Watch Barca, Juve, Bayern or whoever's on top of the J-league. It's not an issue - completely understandable to want to watch a team winning games so just do it. But if you want to support Liverpool then be prepared for a struggle at least in the short term. If FSG and Rodgers aren't the right partnership we'll know after a couple of seasons. But don't spout your half cocked tripe now and then pretend you're a supporter when the club is lifting number 19. That's softer than a Shelvey - Joe Cole love child. This club is going to win number 19 and the tough periods right now are going to make that very sweet indeed.

I think I could even like this post if you ask nicely.

I don't really get that mentality. I know it's the kind of call to arms that has people fisting pumping in their bedrooms and searching furiously for the like button but yeah I'm not one of them.

I'll criticize the manager when I feel it's justified (and right now criticism is justified) and anyone who thinks it's "soft" or somehow means I'm not supporting the team can frankly go fuck themselves.
