Dele Alli: Steven Gerrard slept through chance to make me join Liverpool

Former West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop still feels that Loris Karius is the long-term solution for Liverpool.

Dele Alli has told BBC Sport that Steven Gerrard missed the chance to convince him to join Liverpool "six months before" he joined Tottenham Hotspur because he slept through the meeting.
Alli, a Liverpool fan as a boy, joined Spurs from MK Dons in February 2015 and has gone on to become one of the top midfielders in the Premier League as well as a full England international.
But, his future could have turned out very differently.

"At the time when I was at MK [Dons] there was contact with Liverpool before I signed for Tottenham," Alli said.

"But that was before we'd even spoke to Tottenham. I think it was six months before.
"We went up there and I think they knew that Steven Gerrard was my hero, so they said he was going to come down to meet me, but when I got there he was asleep apparently.

"I think he had a game the next day though so I understand."

It was atrocious mismanagement, nothing to do with Gerrard. We had a Liverpool-supporting manager personally driving his Liverpool-supporting player up for talks with us, and we managed to make him think Spurs would be a better prospect. The doziness of the Parry era didn't mess up any worse as far as recruitment is concerned.

Spurs did what most clubs do - they flattered and lied to get their man, assuring Alli he'd play straight away, only to, once he'd signed, tell him they were planning to send him out on loan. Then, more by accident than design, he got a chance in the first team and took it.

Its a clusterfuck alright. With Robinson there and Alli being a Liverpool fan it should have been very straightforward.
But, I'm actually not that bothered anymore. He was "cheap" and English (homegrown quota) but there are bigger talents out there.
He'll turn out a good player but acts the cunt and dives all over the place. Cant stand him.
Fits right in with the cunts at Spurs.

He's a great talent and he could be behaving differently if he played for us.

And who's to say we won't sign him from Spurs ? [emoji28]

At his age Gerrard could be pretty nasty, and it was only after time and teaching that he eventually found more discipline, cut out his ridiculous star-shaped dives, over the top tackles and petulant retaliation. Alli is a young kid with great potential and we could have shaped him into a really impressive midfielder.

He's nothing like Gerrard in my opinion. Would have been good to sign him obviously but I'm not that bothered anymore about missing out.

im not sure how he will end up, he's certainly got the potential to be the top English player for the next decade or so, im not sure the fact that he's still young and therefore petulant and mischievous at times necessarily detracts from that ability either

I was only comparing him to Gerrard specifically about that 'nasty' attitude at the same age. I'm a bit surprised at the lack of concern about missing out - we still appear to need Lucas in our squad, and people are dismissing Alli like he's some kind of run of the mill stroller.

I think everyone was disappointed we missed out.

He's a good player no doubt, but his performances this year have tempered expectations a bit.

It sounds like a badly organised and miscalculated recruitment effort but i can't begrudge Gerrard a day off or a sleep.

Wow, really? Bold shout that. Think he's an excellent player who'll only get better. Would loved to have seen him in a Liverpool shirt.

How fucking dare Steven Gerrard be asleep when the infamous Dele Alli had driven all the way up to the club?
What a fucking cunt. It was all Gerrard's fault that we missed on this ridiculous talent and that's why we haven't won the league in 26 years.
Jesus.

Yeah, it probably is but I just cant help thinking he's a bit overrated and his attitude makes me think it will effect his development. As Macca says though it would have been different to see him develop with us and what could have been.

I usually havent got a clue about this and was off my tits drunk last night, so he'll probably win Balon D'or 10 times in a row now.

The boat for Alli has long sailed. We'll only sign him if he does a Robbie Keane, and that's unlikely. Even if he does Rosco will hate him.

Back on topic, we had a rigid wage structure, which by all accounts we have reduced even further so it would happen again in the new era. Alli wanted more than our maximum.

The only reason why we could and should have broken it was he was already in the MK first XI on merit.

And for the comment that spurs lied to him, they didn't. He always wanted to remain at MK that year. Yes he dives and has a nasty streak in him, as Macca said. Gerrard had the same winning mentality and dare I say it was seen to be making the most out of being caught by the wind at times.

Time will tell if we truly missed out. Last year it looked like we had, this year not so much. Second year syndrome.

very harsh mate. Gerrard needed his sleep.

All Liverpool player amazing. All player linked to Liverpool amazing. All other players not great (unless they are later linked to Liverpool)

If that all it took for Alli boy to sulk - imagine if he was benched for a while - he would cry to every national newspaper - so it remains to be seen how long he really lasts as Spurs.

He's a top player and would walk into our team. Missing out on him was a mistake, a stupid one by the sounds of it.

For who ? He wouldn't currently replace any of the front four and isn't disciplined enough, as an out and out attacking midfielder, to replace any of our other midfielders who are required to do more than their fair share of defending.
Potential is undeniable but on current form I wouldn't have him down as a starter with our formation and tactics.

That's said with hindsight of seeing him "now" under Spurs development. Who's to say we wouldn't have developed him differently? You can't really say he's not good enough to oust the spear(s) of our midfield, when it's being led by Lallana and Wijnaldum, two players most people would have said a couple of years back were not that great that they were unshiftable. Of course he would have stood a chance and his current form is neither here nor there, we've developed plenty of players ourselves with mixed results, Sterling left and had a terrible season, this season he's been back closer to his best form which he enjoyed for us, but WE developed him enough to engineer a £50m move.

Larry used no modifiers and made a simple statement I queried, so hindsight isn't pertinent, the question/statement isn't that complex.

I wouldn't have him in our team, this season, over anyone currently incumbent. Definitely not over Lallana and not over Wijnaldum because he is neither a fulcrum not defensive or disciplined enough to play that role (more like a Dembele vs Wijnaldum choice perhaps). So it comes down to Alli or Lallana. No contest this season.

As to whether he would have developed better or worse under LFC that's an impossible call to make and using Sterling as an example is irrelevant. Why not use Ibe ? Of course if you are referring to simply developing him to make a profit then I agree we would have done.
