It's time for Brendan to do the right thing and drop this lazy, moany, de-motivated and unperforming "Captain" of ours.

Another dismal performance. Sick to the back teeth of it.

He's still a very clever footballer but when he just strolls around game after game he's really taking the piss. His whole approach to captaincy has been to do something great and scowl at those who don't do well. When he's not doing something great he's a waste of space as a captain and he's currently a very sloppy midfielder. He keeps saying he's never felt fitter, which only makes his performances more galling to watch. Reina's been rested, so, yes, maybe he needs it. Get his mind right as well as his body.

he's still capable of defence splitting passes, its the simple mistakes that he's been making lately that piss me off, his games full of lazy shitty backpasses

I think we have to face the fact that Gerrard is not as good as he used to be, but he is still very good. I think he can make a very useful contribution to the team for a couple of seasons yet.

I hated the way the captaincy was taken off Sami Hyypia and given to Gerrard. I felt that was a totally gratuitous slap in the face to Sami, who had done nothing to deserve it.

But he's not very good anymore. He may be capable of some great moments, but overall his play has been largely awful since last year. He had a spell when he came back when he looked good, but since then.... He's a shadow of the player he was.

He does need a rest and o think December is the perfect time mainly down to the fact that we play "weaker" opposition.

Give sahin or shelvey a run in that role.

BR hasnt got the balls to drop him.

If we started to loose a few and he wasn't playing, the press (and some fans!) would slaughter him.

He needs to keep stevie on side with him and hope his form picks up.

If he wasn't the captain, I'd defo drop him. Unfortunately as he is, we're going to have to carry him until he retires. That backheel he 'attempted' today infront of the box was hideous. A few 50yard glamour balls just dont cut it as a contribution from him any more.
He's not on his own through, I can't remember the last good performance I saw out of any of our CM/DM's.

Gerrard carried us for seasons on end and now he's playing poor drop him what about when our defence midfield forwards are shit do we drop them..? no we keep playing them, he can play a match winning pass like no other, the dressing room wouldn't be the same without stevie, he isn't the player he once was but my god he needs to be in this team, he the fittest he's ever been (according to himself) and he's started every prem game this season... Hail Stevie G

He's not that bad. Fucking hell. You're making him out to be Bruno Cheyrou. I'd much rather have him than not. He's a victim of his past success and stellar performances.

He gave the ball away on a number of occasions, and just sailed through the game not giving a fuck. He landed us in trouble 2 or 3 times with misplaced passes in our own half but luckily enough it didn't cost us.

The best players can have a bad game, it happens, but there's no excuse for failing to give your all and doing your bit for your team. Gerrard's failed on that front in almost every game this season and yet people slag off the likes of Allen, Downing and Henderson like there's no tomorrow.

He's been our best players for the last decade but that's no longer the case and the sooner people realise it, the better. Other top players have adapted their game and he has to as well.

In the meantime, we should stick him on the bench. It's not like we're short of options in the centre of midfield: Allen, Henderson, Sahin, Shelvey and Suso. Lucas will be back soon too.

He had a poor first half from what I saw, but picked it up after half time. He's had as many good games as bad this season, which isn't good enough. But people shouldn't make out that he's a useless liability. He's still Steven Gerrard. And he's still capable of great things. He's shown flashes of his undoubted class this season, and I'm sure he'll get back on track. He's still a good player at top level. See his performances for England over the summer.

I agree that he needs to adapt his game, though. He should be being played further forward than he is at the moment.

He needs a rest more often.

When he's played having been rested he's looked every inch the player this system him needs him to be. Clever passing, not going off on one, but occasionally going past players or playing a dynamic through ball to feet or into space.

He should be rested every other game.

For a player with his superb technique, there's really not much excuse for some of his passing these days. He blasts balls into the shins of teammates for a one-two and then looks appalled that they can't control it; he picks out players on the wing and hits the pass over their heads into touch; he signposts some of his through balls so clumsily that defenders intercept them with ease; and as for his back passes, well, oh dear... It's exasperating.

He was very poor today though, we're it not for downing he'd have been perhaps the worst on the pitch.

He's an extremely intelligent player & can do a job almost anywhere, but when he's tired & struggling physically he can't use that intelligence cos he's focusing on the basics so much.

Behave you bunch of cretins. Look at you. All ready to swoop once he's playing badly. I'm under no illusion.hes a spent force, but your disrespect towards one of our best ever players is nauseating. I think we can all agree that he needs to be benched/rested. There is however, no need to talk about him with contempt like he's some sort of Stewart Downing.

I think Stevie suffers from the weight of his own past heroic efforts. Of the 3 central midfielders today he was easily the best as he has been in a few games. He's not setting the world alight but more importantly we have nobody to replace him.

Gotta take the rough with the smooth, no?

He's had plenty of praise over the years, richly deserved praise for his unbelievable performances and service to the Club.

However, his lacklustre performances this season and last season for that matter can't be ignored. Some people see what they want to see and turn a blind eye to the obvious because their so stubborn in their views.

It doesn't help matters when Gerrard spouts bollocks in the media that he doesn't need to change his game and that he's still as great as ever but that's patently not the case and hasnt been for some time.

Didn't he have an 89% pass success rate today ?

I wonder if that 'backheel' brought his numbers down a bit. It nearly cost us a goal.

As fff said, he needs a rest every other games, or only wheel him out for the big games/off the bench when we need it.

He's not the player he was that much is obvious. I think the injuries he's picked up over the years playing for our club have taken its toll. I really don't feel as a player he could have given much more for the team yet that seems easily forgotten when people are calling him lazy and moaning. I dont think that's right. I also think he's not actually the problem. Our historical over reliance on him is and that can no longer be justified nor do I feel it's fair on him, especially his own fans jumping on his back. He owes this club nothing in my view
