Steven Gerrard will miss Liverpool's pre-season tour of Asia as he continues to recover from two groin operations.

The 31-year-old England midfielder has been out of action since March.

"I'm sure people will appreciate Steven giving himself the best opportunity to play against Sunderland on the opening day of the new campaign," manager Kenny Dalglish told the club website.

"Steven and the medical team are in the final stages of getting him back to full training."

Gerrard initially had surgery after picking up the injury in the win at Chelsea in February and was scheduled to return before the end of last season.

But the Reds captain suffered a setback in his recovery and went under the knife for a second time in April, signalling the end of his campaign.

"I'd really been looking to travelling and meeting first hand as many as our fans as possible," said Gerrard.

"I'm really sorry that I won't now be able to do that.

"But after sitting down and talking with our medical experts, it's been decided that the best course of action is for me to continue my rehabilitation programme at Melwood.

"It's disappointing I won't be with them, but I'm sure the lads who go out there will put a great show on for our fans."

Liverpool will play games in China and Malasyia as well as training in Singapore on the eight-day trip to the Far East, which begins on Sunday.

They begin their Premier League season at home to Sunderland on Saturday, 13 August before travelling to Arsenal a week later.

I'm sure many are disappointed, but it's to be expected.

NO point risking him on a junket.

Agreed. Doesn't help though when the bandwagon fans cry in shame of this move. It's simply a case of getting him fully fit for the new season and concentrate on winning the title rather than travel thousands of miles just to gain a few quid.

He might be. Wouldn't surprise me sadly.

We just need to make sure we strengthen enough so it's less of a massive blown

Only positive.

Makes me wonder how severe that injury was though.

I've posted a few times regards this, he did an interview a few weeks ago and he said the groin had come away from the bone 98%.... pretty bad!

According to the Telegraph Raul wont travel to Asia eiter.

Guess he's on hiscway if true..

I've heard loads of local rumours that his career could be finished. I do stress that they are rumours though.

Tony Barrett also dismissed the rumours about Stevies career being over a couple of days ago, saying there where no truth to it whatsoever.
Barrett seems to be the one with the best contacts at the club at the moment. Think he's also going to write Pepe Reinas autobiography aswell.

He is, it was confirmed on twitter by Barrett this weekend.

I think I put on here before the end of last season that his career was over. This was based on some horses mouth stuff from his dad... I think there was genuine concern then and if there was, and if this medical work has been as experimental as it sounds, then I doubt anyone knows how well he'll do given a real match. He might be fixed, but maybe he'll break down very easily.

Yeah I'd heard the same, via his Dad that his family were worried his career was over. He'd said himself that when he got injured in training his groin had come 98% away from the bone, that can't be easy to overcome surely and as groin injuries are generally quite niggly anyway, the healing process is quite drawn out.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is set to miss the first two months of the new Premier League season, according to reports.

The 31-year-old has been struggling for fitness for some time now, and 'Mirror' reports that a second groin injury has caused a delay in the midfielder's recovery.

This latest setback would mean that the Anfield skipper is likely to miss England's international friendly against the Netherlands in August, and could also be absent for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales in September.

Liverpool are not short of midfielders due to the signings of Charlie Adam from Blackpool and Jordan Henderson from Sunderland, while Alberto Aquilani has returned from his loan spell with Juventus.

Thank God we've got Aquilani.

Sarcasm detected.

Heh, he's as good a reserve as we've got. I'm yet to see anyone really disprove the theory that he's the closest we've got in terms of a ball player, all our other midfielders have different attributes, I don't think any pass the ball quite as well. Whatever his so called flaws, mentally or physically, he's a good player regardless of his rollercoaster Liverpool career.

True. If Gerrard really is out for the first two months of the season then i'd be amazed if Kenny was still willing to let Aquilani go.

Kenny would only let him go I reckon if the offer was too good to turn down, eg we break even on him

Joey Barton's available.

Haha, like that's gonna happen.

Liverpool deny Gerrard setback

Liverpool have moved to quell reports that Steven Gerrard could be set to miss up to the first two months of the season, after claims that his groin injury is worse than first thought.

A Sunday newspaper had written that the club were braced for the fact they will have to start the new Premier League campaign without their skipper after complications arose in the recovery from his current injury.

Such a layoff would also force him to miss England's international friendly with Netherlands on August 10 and struggle to be fit for the Euro 2012 qualifier with Wales on September 6, but the Reds are adamant the midfielder has not suffered any sort of setback.

"Steven Gerrard's rehabilitation is progressing as planned," the club told ESPNsoccernet.

Gerrard, 31, was not with the club on their recent tour of Asia as he continued his recovery on Merseyside.
