Steven Gerrard has been attacked by a thug who threatened him and hurled abuse near his luxury home.
The England and Liverpool captain was not seriously hurt but was left badly shaken by the assault outside a convenience store.
Police are investigating the terrifying incident, which raises concerns about security for Gerrard, 33, and his family.
In a bizarre twist, a police officer was arrested soon after amid an investigation into whether an attempt was made to obtain a CCTV recording of the attack from a nearby shop. She was quizzed by detectives on suspicion of committing misconduct in a public office.
The attacker struck as football star Gerrard, who was alone, got out of his Range Rover in the upmarket village near Liverpool where he lives with wife Alex, 31, and their three young daughters.
Gerrard, expected to captain Liverpool away against Hull City today, was abused, threatened and assaulted before the man ran away.
Officers took a statement from the player after the incident in August and are hunting the attacker for common assault.
A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “As a result of this investigation, a female officer who has been on a career break since early this year is being investigated in relation to potential misconduct in a public office. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”

The fact it happened in August is irrelevent to us. Since as far as I know this is the first any of us have heard of it. So it's news.

I wonder how the Policewoman now under investigation ties into this. Was the thug related to her ? Weird.

I think we know all too well that CCTV evidence that either exonerates our supporters or shows the blame doesn't lie with us has gone missing before. So of course I'm jumping to conclusions here, but I'd suspect that the officer was either doing a favour for a mate/relative or is putty in the hands of the criminals. I cant go into details but I'm in the middle of a case at the moment where there is the potential that criminals have police in their pocket. Of course it's also possible that it's internal politics within the force but the fact that the former has real potential, is pretty scary from a personal point of view.

Oh and this appears in a Sunday newspaper, the day of an important game, 3 months after the actual incident. Draw your own conclusions as to why...

Just to play Devils Advocate here though, you'd think they'd release a story like this before a BIG game, every game is as important as this Hull game.

Yeah I get that Jon, but lose this and we're 7 points behind Arsenal and the rest of the world will be level on points. So this is big and is the type of test we've failed dismally in the past.

We've been doing very well against weak sides under Rodgers so hopefully we'll twat them.

I imagine very few people in Liverpool are able to outrun Gerrard even at his age. Suarez would be one of them.

How does someone with as profoundly beige a personality as Gerrard manage to attract so much aggro?

Phew, that's relief, I was almost booking extra security for Tim Henman. Then you mentioned talent.

maybe that copper bint was trying to get the video in order to leak it to a rag and get a pay day .
