Sterling Contract Situation

He's been at arsenal for over 5 years now (i think), a full england international, has scored in important games and has been their best player this season. I've no problem with sterling staying and hope he does, just saying that a guy who is only 17 and hardly done anything significant in his football career shouldn't be asking for 50k a week. Right now he's only potential, but is being overrated by many reds i think. Still loads of flaws in his game.

It sickens me how much players earn BUT setting his age apart, I think we would all agree he is an upgrade quality wise on Downing and unlike Downing is one of the first names on the teamsheet - if you were in that position would you think it was right that Downing earnt in a week what you earned in two months?

There's no guarantees with any signing, I think people need to rethink what risk is when it comes to player deals.

Raheem from 18-23 for 15m or Walcott from 24-29 for probably 35m all in. To be fair I think I'd take both but if it had to be one it would be Sterling. Walcott is heavily reliant on pace and doesnt appear to be too polished technically, which means injuries would seriously affect his value - like Owen. And I think pact wingers are always better in their early twenties.

Agree with all that except the bit about taking Walcott 35m shudders. Amortisation is the word you are looking for

yeah i know what you're saying because downing is dogshit. But for some reason downing was actually rated by some people for many years which mugged us into giving him his current contract. Sterling is still young and needs to get consistency in his game. Its just worrying that at 17 he's already more concerned about getting 50k than regular first team football. he wouldn't play as often at arsenal and manure.

He has been very impressive for a 17 - 18 year old in his first season in the top flight. Yes, his game has a lot of flaws. He has not been Owen/Fowler/Rooney impressive at 17-18 but he still has been very very good for his age. But he has shown signs of absolute quality and intelligence which suggests that he is going to learn and improve. If we bungle up this contract, he is not going to sign for QPR or Villa - it is going to be one among Chelsea, City, Man Utd, and Arsenal who will offer him whatever he wants.

I know its horrible him wanting 50k - my only point is it Is what he is worth atm with the rediculous sums these fuckers earn. We simply cannot afford not to pay him this if it means him being snapped up by someone else, as the alternative will cost us alot more and may not be as good especially in a season or two

Exactly its the big clubs who want him because he is going to be a big talent.

I dunno what Sterling actually wants but he isn't negotiating. If I was his agent I'd have told him to sit tight and play footy and don't worry I'll get you the most I possibly can and I want it to be tons coz I'm on a percentage.

Then I'd turn round to Liverpool and say all the big European clubs are after him and get your cheque book out, we want fifty.

You can't think any more or less of players getting mad deals anymore, they're out of the loop, they're being traded with. You can get mad if Liverpool offer something they'll never recoup on bags of shite, but even if we paid him 100k a week there is no way, barring terrible injury, that we can lose on this kid.

excellent point succinctly put

Odd about Kelly ... Wonder if it's playing time, money or BS?

Liverpool are confident they are close to persuading teenage winger Raheem Sterling to sign a new, long-term contract but have been rebuffed in their attempts to tie down a second young England star in Martin Kelly.

Representatives for Sterling, who turned 18 last weekend, held fresh talks with club chief executive Ian Ayre last week to try to thrash out a deal. The two sides were a long way apart in earlier negotiations.

Set to sign: Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling

Sources believe Liverpool are close to agreeing terms with the forward, who made his England debut against Sweden last month, and have promised big performance-related incentives to take him close to other regular first-teamers on around £50,000 a week.

With Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United waiting in the wings, Liverpool are confident a deal with Sterling is imminent. Manager Brendan Rodgers stated after yesterday's 3-1 home defeat by Aston Villa: 'I am not bothered by speculation about Raheem and other clubs. That situation (Sterling's contract) will be resolved soon, I'm sure.'

Snub: Defender Martin Kelly

But it is less good news for the club regarding Kelly, a member of England's Euro 2012 squad, who has turned down an offer worth £35,000 a week in wages and appearance money and is now awaiting the club's reaction before making his next move.
The versatile defender who, like Sterling, has 18 months left on his present deal, is recovering from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained against Manchester United in September.

He forced his way into Roy Hodgson's squad in the summer after impressing on his England debut against Norway in May.

That is odd about Kelly, his injury record is appalling, so if true I don't think he's being reasonable.

If its true its a very odd move by Kelly, unless most of the wages are apperance based due to his injury record.

He has to do more for me, yes I think he should be offered a decent amount but he is a forward and he needs to score more goals and contribute more.

He should be rested, but we have noone else.

He'll probably sign a new contract this week.

Drop sterling and play suso or assaidi

He needs a rest, or a bollocking for being so wasteful

I feel miserable about all things LFC at the moment so the 'look at me and my agent' libidinous midget can do what he wants.

50k per week... for what? Not looking as shit as some of the other also-rans? Club must be bonkers.

You can't blame him for considering going to clubs where he'll win things.

Tbf we've won stuff more recently than most. If he limits a move to clubs winning stuff that's a pretty small target.

Is he going to get in Citeh, Chelsea or United's team?

We haven't won anything for ages. It's the new history. It's like the old history, but rewritten by simpletons and antipodeans. Anyway, Sterling ought to consider both mancs, Chelski, Arsenal, Spurs, maybe even Everton. He shouldn't play so much at his age anyway, even though Rodgers has been forced to been brave enough to overplay him.

We won something last year?

It's 30k apparently

regards

At the moment, he's not worth 10k a week. But I guess 30k plus a fat signing on fee, plus a fat fee for his agents is the going rate.
I like the lad, but for 30 bloody k a week I'd be expecting some goals, assists and killer balls. All of which he's not doing at the moment.

It's a sensible enough compromise in all the circs. He'll hardly be the only footballer who's getting paid more than he's worth.
