==========
Gerard Houllier will allow wantaway Aston Villa midfielder Stephen Ireland to leave the midlands club after claiming: "Once a player wants to go, he goes.''

But Houllier believes Villa will want to recoup the £8million valuation placed by Manchester City on Ireland as part of the deal which saw James Milner move to Eastlands in the summer. Houllier has held a further meeting with Ireland and his representative with the player making it clear he feels his future lies elsewhere.

He was left out of the matchday squad for last Saturday's derby with West Brom and has also been excluded for tomorrow's clash at Wigan. Houllier made it clear soon after arriving at Villa three months ago that he wanted Ireland to "work harder''. He has always recognised the talent of Ireland but it appears a parting of the ways could occur during the January transfer window.

When asked about the meeting with Ireland, Houllier said: "I don't know why you are asking me because, if you get the agent, he will tell you! I said he is a member of my squad, that I expect him to be performing a bit more when we play games, that is all. There is a discrepancy between what I see in training sometimes and what I see in the games. I told his agent that is his problem, he has got to sort that out.

"I like the man, I like the player, he has got a skilled touch, he has got an eye for the pass, but he has got to adapt to modern football as well.''

Asked if the player might leave in the winter transfer window, Houllier replied: "He said he wanted to go in January. He said that to his agent. I am not so convinced about that. Have I told him to move? No, no, no. Once a player wants to go, he goes. Simple as that. I think we will be looking to get the same kind of money back. The club probably would.''

Houllier denied that Ireland had been axed from the squad as a disciplinary measure or that playing him in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Leicester was a punishment.

He said: "I read stupid things like punishment and things like that. There is no punishment. There is a punishment when the player is not involved at all. There is a punishment when the player is not training at all. That is a punishment. This is not the case. Stephen needed a game, he played a game (against Leicester) with John Carew, Robert Pires, Nigel Reo-Coker and others that needed a game.''

Houllier also hinted that the door would be open for a first-team recall for Ireland if he showed improved form.

He said: "Of course he will (be given the opportunity). He will have to click and give us something. But I am quite patient. You've got to be patient. But he is not involved in the squad that travels to Wigan. Simple as that and I don't want to add to that. It is a football decision. Is that clear?''

Houllier admits he may offload a couple of players next month but denies he has been asked to reduce the wage bill.

He said: "Maybe there are one or two that will leave. Probably those who are not happy not to play on a regular basis, yes. But that is football. But I wasn't asked to bring the wage bill down. Nothing special like that.''

Agree with this fully.. but in saying that his cuntyness is generally harmless. Should come cheapish too.

I like Ireland, he is a very good player, and for £8m would be great.
As for being a cunt, well is he? I think most people are basing that on having a RangeRover with pink wheels, or perhaps a shaved head and a beard.
I was impressed with his Mrs on a wags come dine with me, she seemed nice enough.
What is everyone basing his cuntishness on. He does not seem any more of a cunt than most of our team.
The only problem is it's in an area where we probably have decent cover. To be honest though, I think Joe Cole is having such a crisis of confidence, unless things pick up dramatically for him between now and the end of the season he might be off.

regards

He's one of the stupidest footballers in the world, which is some achievement.

He had one splendid season for Shitty, and was rightly lauded, but his career has stalled badly.

I dunno, I don't think we need another luxury player whose best position is some kind of 'floating' attacking midfield role.

We have other priorities, like a striker, winger, decent CM player who can tackle, CB, and LB.

So no thanks.

I completely agree Bren, as I said probably the only area we are not short in.
He could be a good buy if we needed a player in that role.

He is stupid, but if that were a yard stick for buying players we would have missed out on several of our legends, and it can be an endearing feature

You can ad fabricating a dead grandmother in order to not play for Ireland to that list! Id take him if we could be sure his head was straight....but we cant...so no!!

He'll go to Fulham, I reckon. He's one of those players (Bellamy, Santa Cruz, et al) who only seem to perform for Mark Hughes.

He made City tick though when he did play at his best, he was like the catalyst in their side.

He reminds me alot of Bowyer though in the way he plays, I just get the impression he won't repeat the levels he reached at City, like Bowyer didn't after he left Leeds.

I'd say he's worth a risk but we seem to have taken alot of risks on players with injury/reputation problems and fallen flat on our arses.

Bowyer tracked back, worked hard, and tackled like a demon.

Some of the comments Houllier's been making about Ireland are really worrying

he was truely fucking woeful against us a few weeks ago..

no commitment - just wondered around sulking as though he was too good to be there.

I'd be pissed off if I was moved from citeh to villa..

you got to think he'd jump at the chance to kickstart his career at a big 4 club (cough)

You'd think that, but by all accounts he's a bit of a space cadet. You really wouldn't know what you were ever going to get from him.

That's fine if you've already got a solid squad and you can afford to take a chance that he might be a difference maker, but I don't think he's right for us at the moment.

Ireland would play in a role where we already have Gerrard and Meireles.

Plus he's a temperamental attention-seeking pain in the arse.

No way should we sign him

Didn't you say we'd be mad not to sign him for 8M a few months back?

I might be wrong, just wondering.

I think Rosco's legal rapier-like will point to :- "a few months back" v "at the moment" Ryan 😉

Heh, you're probably right.

I did a quick search - http://sixcrazyminutes.com/forums/index.php?topic=40130.0 - May this year, so recent enough I suppose.

We did not have Miereles , or Cole then though so at that time it was probably a good shout.

Yeah, true.

I quite like Ireland as a footballer. He's got great ability, but as others have pointed out - he's a nutcase and is probably best avoided.
