Is this guy any good? His name is now being banded about as xabi's replacement. His agent has also confirmed we have enquired. Anyone got the low down on this kid? Would you be happy if he came in place of Xabi.

Steven Defour has joined Roma’s Alberto Aquilani on the list of candidates to replace Xabi Alonso at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield and has admitted his interest in an £18m Anfield move.

While Real Madrid have yet to match Liverpool’s valuation on Alonso, Defour, 21, said: ‘I have an agreement with Standard Liege that I could go to a top club, and Liverpool fit the bill.’

Defour, who is under contract until 2013, is also wanted by Real Madrid should they fail to prise Alonso away from Anfield.

'Steven's name has been mentioned not only at Real Madrid, but also at Liverpool - they are looking at him too,' said the player's agent, Paul Stefani.

'Normally he would stay for another year, but nobody could say no to clubs like those - and Liege would not stand in his way.'

He'd be aces for some nicknames.

There are bound to be hundreds of Darfur-related gags and puns that we can all fall about laughing over.

Ive been advocating this lad as Alonsos replacement. Fantastic talent, great passer of the ball, energetic, mobile and scores his share of goals. Theres a reason why he's made captain at such a young age. Head and shoulders above anyone from Belgium talentwise, including Fellaini.

Defour would my first choice if Shabby leaves.

Wasn't Xabi the captain of RS at age 19? Nice coincidence...

Really? When we played Liege in those Champs league qualifiers Fellaini was the player who impressed me far more.

Obviously you've seen more of Defour, so what does he bring to the side?

Hi. I'm here to replace Xabi.

Defour's a talented footballer who will go on to bigger and better things, but he's still young and a very different footballer to Alonso.

Based on the little I've seen of him, he's far from the ideal replacement.

We have to realise that we perhaps shouldn't try and replace Xabi with an Alonso identikit, because, the fact of the matter is, there isn't one out there. Perhaps we should embrace tinkering with the way we play instead, adapt our system to fit our personnel rather than the reverse.

I agree, I wasn't opposed the Sneijder coming here and us adapting our style of play.

The only player who fits like-for-like is Pirlo, and he shouldn't be signed for a million reasons.

My doubts about Defour are mainly his age and inexperience, and that he maybe too attack-minded in contrast to Aquilani.

if we can't have wesley than i prefer the potential of this lad to the injury history of aquilani
