Bolton defender Stephen Darby has announced his retirement from football, aged 29, after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND).

The full-back last played in December.

"I would like to ask for privacy at this time so I can adjust to the battle I have ahead and that I can spend time with those closest to me," he said.

Poor guy.
On a less serious note I always wanted him to play alongside Trent.

Don't think recovery is an option, he just needs to tick off everything he wants to do whilst he still has some mobility.

Sadly, I don't think there can be a full recovery from motor neurone disease. Hopefully he receives top care and support and lives his life to the maximum.

Prognosis: Life expectancy after diagnosis is one to five years, with only 10 per cent of people living 10 years or more.
Wish only the best for the guy.

I didn't realise that 50% of those diagnosed die within 2 years. In my ignorance I thought Stephen Hawking was a standard sufferer. Terrible news for him and his family.

That may be skewed since most people are much older than him when they are diagnosed.

Horrible disease. It can be a slow and ultimate painful death, rotten. I've treated those with it to make them comfortable, it's just bloody awful.

I've seen mnd fuck a man up first hand over the period of about 18 months , horrible to watch , it's literally like watching someone's death being dragged out over a prolonged period.

Thoughts are with him and his family , hope he and his loved ones can get the best care possible

There's quite a few docs speculate Hawking had polio and was misdiagnosed, as no-one lasts that long with motor neurone disease. My mate's bro got it last year. Was six months between falling over his feet the first time till death.

Shit, that's quick. My mate's brother also got it, he lived about 8 years or so with it. He was only about 25 when he was diagnosed with it.
