Staying in Liverpool

I found nothing up to date so I felt free to post a new thread.

I am flying over to Liverpool for the match against Fulham on Dec 22nd with one of my mates. We're flying to Manchester airport because no direct flights to Liverpool are available from here. We're planning to stay in Liverpool from Friday till Sunday though.

So any advice on where to stay and 'must-sees' in Liverpool would be much appreciated. Tips on how to get from Manchester to Liverpool quickly and cheaply would be useful.
