Liverpool FC starlet could replace England international, hints Dalglish
by Richard Buxton. Published Mon 17 Jan 2011 17:18

Martin Kelly's recent displays could see him displace Glen Johnson as Liverpool's first-choice right-back.

The Whiston-born youngster stepped into the void left by Johnson as the imminent birth of his son saw him miss Kenny Dalglish's return to the dugout against Manchester United last weekend, and retained the role even when the England international was available.

For the midweek trip to Blackpool and yesterday's 2-2 draw with Everton, Johnson deputised at left-back, and Dalglish believes that Kelly, who graduated through the club's youth ranks, could command a regular starting role if he can continue the rich vein of form.

He said: "If he keeps playing like that Glen may have a problem - but I'm sure he's happy to play left-back.
"I thought Kelly played really well. He played really well in the first two games against Man U and Blackpool, and I thought [against Everton] he was excellent.

"It's fantastic for us to see young boys starting to develop.

"If you get one like that it is not for us to take the credit, it is the people before us and it has been fantastic for Martin to come and play."

Kelly, 20, is hoping that his recent performances will have convinced Dalglish, taking the reins at Anfield until the end of the season, that he is worthy of a regular place in his starting line-up.

"I'm made up with my own form. Hopefully I'll keep training well and get a chance to play," he said.

"It's the first time I've played three games in a week and it is pretty tough on you mentally as well as physically but it is all a learning curve.

"In the Premier League, Europa League and Champions League you need to play three times a week so it's really good to do that."

So obviously a Premiership player from early on and he's taken to the first team like a duck to water. It's nice to see a genuinely decent player come out of the reserves and look the part, even if he isn't the type that gets people talking.

He does get us talking though, all the time, we knew he was a gem from the first match Rafa gave him.

Kenny gave the previous regime credit, but not sure if Rafa or Gary Ablett is the man to applaud?

Lets just say well done to both of them eh?

Tall, elegant centre-half Martin Kelly graduated to Melwood in the summer of 2007 and was a part of Gary Ablett's reserve team that won the League in the 2007-8 season. Rafa included him in the group of Liverpool players listed for the Champions League and he made his debut when he came on for Jamie Carragher in the 82nd minute against PSV Eindhoven on 9th December 2008. He didn't play any more games that season for Liverpool's first-team and was loaned out to Huddersfield Town in League One from March until the end of the 2008-2009 season and made 7 League appearances for the Yorkshire club. Kelly finally made his full Liverpool debut against Lyon at Anfield in a group stage game in the 2009-2010 Champions League season. He played as right-back and had a man-of-the-match performance, delivering quality crosses and showing undoubted skills. He might have had a good run in the side but injured his groin against Lyon and was sidelined for four months.

For all that people go on about him being a natural CB, he looks a pretty natural full-back to me. Fast, aggressive, great engine, can beat a defender and put in a good cross. He's already the best full-back at the club.

Stories linking Glen Johnson to Spurs today, 15 mill £. I'd sell him after the season and play Kelly as our first team starter.

I doubt we will sell him to an English Club? Especially one of our Champions League Riva ..... oh hang on!

Cash and a player, or a player swap would suit us better?

Johnson for kranjcar or palacios and 10 mil and I'd suck harry off for free.

Johnson would probably be Bale-esque under Harry for Spurs and then everyone would wonder why we ever sold him. Besides, if we get rid of Johnson, then what... we're left with Kelly, Aurelio and Konchesky for the fullback positions? No thanks.

It's the same thing with Torres in a way... rather than hoping we ensure the team is good enough to give our better players the platform to shine, we think we should sell them.

I'd sell Glen regardless. He's been a massive liability and the simple truth is that he cannot defend.

I'd still really like to see him given a go at right midfield but at this stage, I'd happily have the cash for him in and get reinforcement in a more needed position

I wouldn't sell GlenJo for anything less than £13m.

He's still England's 1st choice right back and buying English usually comes at a premium (for us, anyway), so we shouldn't be selling him on the cheap.

£15m is tempting.. and if Kelly wasn't half man, half injured i'd certainly go for it.. and use the money (after selling Aurelio and Konchesky for tupenny) to buy 2 maybe 3 good full backs.

^^^

johnson has real talent going forwards and is no where no as good going the other way so instead of channelling that attacking threat we'd rather get rid. marvelous, because the modern liverpool team is BRIMMING with attacking talent...

Martin Kelly is not, and has never been, a "starlet".

Sick of the word "starlet" being applied to footballers, too.

YES I KNEW IT!!!!

Does it mean he's become a member of the 1st team squad? I note he hasn't a squad number, but with Ecclestone going on loan it might mean he's getting his squad number. Maybe.
