Spurs Match Thread

I've lost a lot of faith in Rodgers over this sudden need to play Downing. If he has decided to, (or has been told to) put Downing in the shop window during Premier League matches then he is so wrong, the man looks like he is going to piss himself whenever someone aims a pass at him.

Same here but I balance that out with the fact he has discovered a new position for Enrique.

Enrique hasn't been 'fine' at left back though. Far from it.
He has been fine... More than fine. The thing is that people here seem to think that left back is the make or brake position.... Just find a good lb and things are solved. Well... left fucking backs neither win or loose you anything. They are just there, and Luis enriqe is more than good enough there. Our problems are a bit more critical!

Asked if he expected a penalty to be awarded at White Hart Lane, either for Steven Gerrard or Luis Suarez, the manager said: "I thought we should have had two. It's incredible.
"We haven't had a penalty [this season]. All the stats will tell you we've been in the penalty box as much as anyone.
"We know we need to be more clinical but to arrive at this stage of the season and not have had a penalty - I don't know what the players have to do!
"Gerrard's was nearly assault, how was that not a penalty? Second one, Suarez spins and William Gallas swings his left foot and he goes down.
"Nothing's going for us and that's how it's been throughout the season. I could go through a whole raft of penalty and offside decisions that are actually pretty straightforward.
"Look at Swansea at the weekend and Everton away. Sunderland away we should have had a penalty, Norwich away we should have had a penalty, we should have had at least one tonight.
"It racks up the points and I hear people and pundits say it evens itself out over the season - so the second half of the season we're going to get a lot of decisions."

i'll be honest , i hate comments like this even if there may be some truth . They just stink of desperation and shifting the blame . Rodgers has been banging on about referees for weeks now , it's getting tiring . Just get on with it .

Listening to TalkShite - and a Spurs fan with some reason just called in (apologies if you were listening to it too) but he said a few words about our team after saying that we should have at least got a draw or even won the game (although after their 2 quick goals they thought we were going to get a real hammering). The things he said about us were:-

1) Despite our dominance their goalkeeper was not that busy.
2) Lack of pace - did not think from what I understood that the team were quick enough apart from Suarez.
3) Midfield looked static according to him with a lack of drive at times.
4) But the big point was that there was a lack of conviction in that he did not think LFC believed they could win at Spurs.

The fourth point is a good one - and in many ways kind of describes that performance against Swansea - there was no urgency in a lot of our play and perhaps its why BR has bought in the brain people to sort out the heads of some of our players (except Suarez - as he wants to fuck up anything in front of him). Have to say it - but the whole team is on the path to Downing in many respects in terms of conviction.

It is never a good point when people appeal to dumb things like "conviction".

Yea, there's a reason why our attacking play attracts euphemisms for shit and unproductive like "lacks belief" at times, it's because the only player in the entire lot who has a high level understanding of the game and a goal threat to back it up is Suarez. If anything, I think we've shown a lot of belief, given that we aren't ever going to score shit tons of goals, even if our entire team was hypnotized to believe it was our manifest destiny to score 10 goals a game.

Despite some stupid errors we were unlucky not to get something last night. But it's been the same old story for years, playing well and getting nowt. Ah well. I think we'll beat Southampton.

As Ronnie Whelan said last night, there comes a point where we can't simply be playing well each week and still beloosing. There has to be some fundamental problems in the way we defend, set up as a team etc where we repeat the same problems week in week out.

Did he give ant suggestions as to how we could fix it?

Yep.

The easy answer which was "We need investment". Also alluded to the return of Lucas, although he caveated it by saying he has been out for a year+ so fans shouldn't think that will fix things.

We've got Henderson keeping Sahin out of the side.

I'm not saying Sahin has done anything any good, but just say that out loud and think about it.

I'm thinking there has to be an appearance clause in the loan deal, I know he hasn't set the world alight but it's the only reason I can think of where he'd be behind Henderson.

I hear your point, but Sahin had a run of however many games and didn't do enough to convince the manager that brought him in that he was worth persevering with.

I can't say I disagree either.

To be honest - I think it's more becuase he is quite average - and has not set hte world alight like you say. I really don't notice him that much when he is playing for us on the same level that I don't really notice Henderson. These players remind me of Lucas in his early days except that they don't even have any sweat on them - which makes it worse because they don't look like they are even making an effort of any kind. Also as Ryan has said - they play it safe at every turn - you can't fault them for any mistakes and at the same time you can't praise them for anything either. Hence they cancel themselves out to be a non-entity to the point they just make up the numbers in the team without doing fuck all.

The thing is, even while doing fuck all in most games, Sahin already has one more goal than Henderson in 1/6th of the appearances. Surely that merits him an appearance over Henderson, never mind back to back starts like Jordan.

There's something more, than meets the eye, going on.

I agree with your disagreement. Considering the level of excitement running up to his signing, i'd say he's been a fairly large disappointment.
