Fenerbahce's Raul Meireles suspended for 11 matches

The Portugal international has been hit with a lengthy ban by the Turkish football authorities after being found guilty of spitting at a match official

By Frank Tigani

The former Chelsea man was handed the sentence after being found guilty of spitting at a referee after he was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence during his side's 2-1 defeat to Galatasaray.

The Portuguese initially denied the allegation, and continued to plead his case that the referee had made a mistake in giving him a red card in the first place.

It was originally thought that Meireles could be suspended for up to seven matches, however, the TFF have decided on a lengthier ban of 11 matches.

The 29-year-old moved to the Turkish giants over the summer from Chelsea and has been a regular in the side since, making over 10 Super Lig appearances this season, scoring once.

When he did he move to Turkey???

I wasn't aware of this. Suppose I should of wondered why I didn't see him playing for Chelsea this season.

Wasn't there a fairly big commotion when we sold this fanny for 12 million.
Money in the bank.

And for me that's the right decision. Spitting is vile, disgusting, unacceptable, of course it is - BUT how badly would Meireles or any other player have to have injured someone before getting a 12-week ban? Hateful as spitting is, I've never understood how it can be regarded as worse than the GBH which sometimes passes for tackling at the highest level.

His reaction deserves a ban but you're kidding yourself if you think he spat in the referee's face.
